Description

Avery Boater’s Parka Dog Vest – Protection, Warmth & Performance in Cold Conditions

Don’t let the cold cut your hunt short—protect your hunting companion with the Avery Boater’s Parka Dog Vest, engineered to shield against the harshest elements. When water temps drop below 55°, air temperatures plunge, and wind speeds rise, your dog can lose body heat fast—putting them at real risk for hypothermia. This vest helps prevent that by trapping body heat, reducing shivering, and helping your dog’s coat dry faster after a retrieve.

Made with 5mm neoprene and a tapered athletic cut, the Boater’s Parka offers a snug fit for both insulation and freedom of movement. Built-in flotation adds buoyancy in the water, while an internal webbing harness and double-tacked seams provide reliable strength and stability when it matters most. Integral carry handles allow for quick, secure lifting in and out of boats or blinds.

How to Measure Your Dog for a Neoprene Dog Vest

Getting the right fit is essential when it comes to neoprene dog vests. A proper fit ensures your dog stays warm in cold water, maintains freedom of movement, and avoids chafing or discomfort. Here's how to measure and adjust your vest for the best possible performance in the field.

Step 1: Gather What You Need
Use a soft seamstress measuring tape for accuracy. If you don’t have one, you can use a piece of string, a leash, or anything flexible to wrap around your dog—then measure it against a standard tape measure.

Step 2: Position Your Dog
Place your dog standing on a table if possible. This keeps them at a comfortable height and helps you measure more accurately.

Step 3: Take Two Key Measurements

  • Chest Measurement
This is the most important measurement. Measure around the deepest part of your dog’s chest, typically just behind the front legs. The vest needs to fit snugly here to retain body heat—if it’s too tight, you won’t be able to put it on; if it’s too loose, it won’t work effectively.

  • Neck Measurement
Measure lower on the neck than you would for a collar—just above the shoulders, where the vest will actually sit. A snug fit here helps trap warmth but avoid cutting the neck opening too large, or it may scoop water as your dog swims.

Customizing the Vest for a Better Fit

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, so minor adjustments may be needed to get the ideal fit.

  • Trimming the Neck or Leg Openings
If the neck or leg holes are too tight, the vest can be trimmed for comfort. Avery dog vests feature reinforced bar tacks sewn across the seams to prevent fraying when trimmed. Trim carefully, and avoid cutting below the next bar tack unless needed.

  • Test in the Water First
Before trimming, try the vest in water. A proper test swim will show whether the leg holes restrict movement or if the neck sits too high or too low. Afterward, have your dog sit and move naturally to check for pressure points or areas where the vest may ride up.

Let Your Dog Get Used to the Vest

Introduce the vest well before opening day. Let your dog wear it during training sessions—on land, in water, while retrieving, and while sitting on a stand or ladder. This gives them time to get fully comfortable and ensures the vest won't be a distraction when it’s time to hunt.

Tip:
Even if it’s your dog’s first time wearing a vest, don’t worry. With the right fit and a little time to adjust, your dog will quickly associate the vest with hunting, work, and success in the field.
