Be Successful Hunting the Whitetail Rut

July 15, 2016 by Joe Scarpy Leave a Comment

Hunting the Whitetail Rut

We all tend to get excited when the rut period is approaching. We all want to go out there with either our guns or bows and start hunting the rut. Do you know the perfect ways of hunting the rut? The rut is divided into three main phases which are: the pre-rut, the rut and the post-rut. These phases vary a bit depending on where you live. By using deer lures and scents this will always increase your chances of harvesting a nice buck.

Pre-rut phase:

This is the phase where bucks will spend most of their time in male groups. These groups of bucks usually move around together feeding. The male groups will usually be seen in the evening. This period is usually in the summer. As autumn approaches, the hormone levels of the bucks rise and the male groups usually start to decrease in size. During this Buck Nut Deer Scentsperiod the antlers also stop to grow. The buck groups will continue to grow smaller and smaller as the hormone levels increase. This is seen as a fight for hierarchy. After a while the male groups will totally break out and each buck will go around looking for its own place to stay.

The rut phase:

This phase is considered as the best phase for hunting the rut. This is because the does usually stand where you are hunting. During this phase, bucks usually search for does to mate. After mating with a doe, the bucks usually move out searching for other does.

Post-rut phase

During this phase, the bucks usually disappear. It is usually challenging to know where the bucks are. Trailing the bucks can very difficult here. Rut hunting can be quite challenging sometimes. You should know the best tactics to use in order to hunt down bucks. You should know when to strike and where to find bucks. Here are some of the skills you should employ when rut hunting: Hunting in the afternoon.

During the afternoon, bucks usually look for places where they can stay. They usually stay in places they see as their food source. While staying there, bucks may start looking for does and start chasing them. Mature bucks usually sit back and watch what their young ones do. You can either choose to target the mature bucks which are watching the younger bucks chasing does or you can target the bucks chasing does. At this point, you should consider targeting the mature bucks. This is because during this time, the mature buck will be concentrating on the other buck chasing a doe. The mature buck is simply not aware of anything happening around it because it is concentrating on the other buck. Simply put yourself in a position for a shot, targeting the mature buck. Depending on the type of weapon you are using, place yourself far enough from the buck. Look out for any kind of obstacle that may hinder you from hitting your target.

Control your scent:

Did you know that bucks have very strong sense of smell about 10,000 time stronger than ours? Now you know. You can control your scent by simply using scent free soaps. Don’t use any kind of perfumes or oils that tend to have strong scents. You should pay more attention to the hairy parts of your body when controlling your scent. Make sure that you totally kill your scent.

Trick the buck using a decoy:

In order to trick a buck using a decoy, you have to be very careful. You should simply place a decoy at a good range where you are sure you will hit your target. When a buck sees another buck, it is most likely to approach it to start a fight. You should wait until a buck approach your decoy. As soon as it reaches it, strike immediately. Another way to work on this is by placing a doe decoy. A buck will obviously want to mate with a doe when it sees it. When a buck sees your decoy doe, the buck will most likely approach the decoy doe from the rare. You should place the doe in a position such that it is not looking at you. Position yourself at a position where the buck will not see you and you will be able to shoot down the buck easily. If those two ways don’t work, you can try out this last one. You can use both a buck decoy and a doe decoy. Simply place the decoys near each other. When a buck sees these decoys, it will view the doe decoy as a potential mate. The buck will with no doubt see the buck decoy as its rival and it will end up being jealous.

Because of jealousy, the buck, will approach the buck decoy in order to start a fight. Search for does in the big woods. This method is best during the morning hours when the sun is rising. In the morning hours, bucks usually move out from there food places and go to the big woods. As the bucks travel into the woods, you can use this as an opportunity to hunt them down. The big woods usually provide good covers where you can place yourself and target a buck without blowing your cover. You should be able to know the woods very well such that you know where the bucks usually go. You should know the path where the bucks usually follow and the best position to place yourself. A tip for you, bucks are most likely not to follow very steep paths.

Rattling:

Rattling calls for a lot of patience from a hunter. You should make rattles which are loud enough to capture a bucks attention. When a buck hears a loud rattling noise, it will think that there are bucks fighting in its territory. You should make sure the rattling sounds as a real fight as much as possible. This will attract a buck to the source of the sound and you will most definitely shoot it down. Hunting a rut calls for a lot of patience. Don’t give up because you’ve had a bad hunting day. It is your duty to make hunting fun.

Our 10 Year Anniversary!

Celebrating our 10th year in business HuntEmUp.com “The World Wide Hunting Dog Super Store” continues its promise of providing its customers with the best products at the lowest possible prices and offering products made in the U.S.A. s often as possible, while serving its customers better than anyone else!

10 years ago I started the business while running AKC / UKC Retriever Hunt Tests.

While waiting to run my dog and realizing all the down time everyone was realizing during this process, I decided to start selling Bumper Boy Launchers out of the back of my truck.  Soon known as the “Bumper Boy Dude” at many local Hunt Tests I decided to start a WEB Site and try selling these units over the WEB.  To my amazement the HuntEmUp.com domain name was not taken and soon after that, HuntEmUp.com was born and 10 years later, we have 1,000’s of products and support several groups including a National Sponsorship of the Hunting Retriever Club (HRC).  Supporting all Youth and Women’s events, an additional Scholarship was handed out at the last National Meeting as a result of the additional projects we are doing with the HRC Grand Events.

Kennel & Dog Training Facilities

The addition of our new kennel facilities in the spring of 2012 has brought great things to the business and continues to help bring our clients the services they need while offering there hunting dog an exceptional boarding experience as well as obedience and retriever gun dog training.

New Business Added

In December of 2013 we purchased another company, WaterfowlDecals.com adds a line of Duck, Goose, Deer, Elk  and other hunting related decals as well as the ability to customize any Hunting Rig, Club Trailer or vehicle with the
highest quality graphics that offer the extreme detail not offered by other decal companies.  If you have a Logo, line of text or image that you would like to see as a decal, send us the file and we can most likely make it a reality!

We would like to send a special Thank You to all our existing customers and if you are not an existing customer; invite you to take a moment to experience the HuntEmUp.com difference by purchasing your next Sporting Dog or related hunting items from us. As I have said since our inception “There is too much competition, not to do it better than anyone else!”

Thanks again for your continued support and all new business!

MARC ANTHONY

Marc Anthony, from central Illinois, has more than 40 years of experience locating and harvesting big-racked whitetails. He’s taken several Pope and Young bucks and five net Boone and Crockett all-time high category whitetails.  More than 80 percent of his bow kills have been from the ground. He is a product tester for outdoor manufacturers and has developed/contributed to several product designs.  Marc is on the pro staff for Bear Archery Products, Muzzy, Polaris and several other outdoor companies. He is an avid freelance writer and a blogger at Marc Anthony Outdoors.

BERNIE BARRINGER

As a serious bear hunter and managing editor of Bear Hunting Magazine, Bernie has traveled to many places and learned much about bear hunting across North America.  Any conversation with Bernie reveals his well of knowledge about the black bear in North America.

Bernie is an accomplished bowhunter who travels the Midwest each year chasing big game and writing about it for his blog bowhuntingroad.com.

Bernie is best known as the author of more than 400 magazine articles and 10 books on fishing, hunting and trapping. He has fished and hunted in more than 20 states and several Canadian provinces.

CHARLIE BROWN

You can hunt any game with a muzzleloader – deer, elk, bear, small game, turkey, waterfowl, upland birds, etc.  In his seminar, Charlie will cover rifles, shotguns, smoothbore and handguns, and shooting a muzzleloader safely in the field and at the range.

Charlie hunts only with a muzzleloader – small game, turkey, deer, pheasants – and has done so more than 30 years, mostly with flintlocks.  He also shoots trap, skeet and sporting clays with a muzzleloader.   He owns in-lines, cap locks, under hammers, flintlocks and black powder hand guns.

Charlie has been a member of the Wisconsin Muzzle Loading Association board of directors many years. He is a member of The Rock River Buckskinners from the Milton area, is the WMLA representative to the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, and a Wisconsin representative for the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. He serves on the Conservation Congress for Rock County & Big Game Committee and is a certified hunter education instructor.

You can talk to him at the new WMLA special display of muzzleloaders and accessories and see many of the types of muzzleloaders through history — hand cannon, matchlock, wheellock, miquelet, snaphaunce, blunderbuss, cannon, musket, flintlock, percussion, percussion (sidehammer, underhammer, inline.  Rifles, shotguns, single barrel and double barrel.

GARY CLANCY

Gary Clancy called in his first buck at eighteen.  He missed it, but he now knew calling worked.  A few years later, brown duck boat paint and white house paint transformed a plywood silhouette into a fairly realistic decoy. The deer that saw it were not impressed, but when he added grunts and antler rattling to the mix, business picked up.

The first buck that responded was a 2-1/2 year old eight-pointer, but to Gary it was a giant.  When the buck got to within eight yards, Gary tried to draw but couldn’t. The excitement of that buck responding to calling and rattling, and then striding stiff-legged into the plywood decoy, was simply too much.  “But I’ve made up for it since,” he says, “with the combination of rattling, calling and decoying.”

Gary has written countless magazine articles and columns, plus eight books, seven of which are on hunting the whitetail deer.

KURT HEID

Kurt Heid has worked in the meat business more than 30 years. He began  in the family meat business, which was recognized as the largest wild game processer at that time in the State of Wisconsin. Currently, he and his family run Heid Wild Game in Appleton, through which he processes more than 400 big game animals each year.

Kurt is also a master sausage maker and an authority on food preparation and preservation through curing and smoking.

ART HELIN

Art began hunting more than 30 years ago. What started as small game and deer hunting grew to an obsession to hunt nearly every big game species across North America. His adventures have allowed him to tag six big game species and four turkey species.

Art has been featured in Wisconsin Sportman, Petersons Bowhunting, North American Hunter and North American Whitetail.

He spends more than 150 days per year in the field hunting, guiding and scouting. He uses the tools and technology available, including aerial and topographical maps and trail cameras. He has planted food plots for years.  Art practices woodland management on his 40-acre property and has recently completed timber stand improvement and pond projects.

 MICHELLE HELIN

Michelle has been a registered nurse for 20 years and CPR/First Aid instructor for the past nine.  Raised in a hunting and fishing family, she continues to live the outdoor lifestyle – hunting, fishing, camping and birding.  With that base, plus the experience of camping and hunting in remote areas, Michelle understands the unique challenges of providing first aid in the great outdoors to yourself and to other hunters.

 DAVE HENDERSON

Considered the nation’s foremost authority on shotgunning for deer, Dave has spent the better part of four decades hunting with and writing about shotguns and muzzleloaders in national magazines.  Formerly the editor and gun columnist for a variety of magazines, he also has served as a consultant in the industry and as a pro staffer for a variety of shotgun, muzzleloader and ammunition companies.

Dave has written eight books on hunting and guns, served as the press coordinator for shotgun sports at the Atlanta Olympics and as a professional elk, deer and turkey guide in his younger days.
