Some of the Best Hunting Dog Breeds

Best Hunting Dog Breeds

Some of the Best Hunting Dog Breeds

Choosing a hunting dog is a personal decision based on a large number of factors. A search through the AKC breed database for the best hunting dog breeds, sporting dogs or hounds will show you that there is indeed a breed for every hunter. Perhaps the most obvious factor to consider when choosing a hunting dog is the type of game you are hunting. While waterfowl and upland birds are probably the first game that comes to mind when hunting with dogs, hunters also use dogs to hunt a variety of other game such as rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, deer, mountain lion and hogs. If not already dictated by the game you are hunting, the terrain you are hunting in will often affect the type of hunting dog you choose. Consider if your dog will need to retrieve ducks out of cold water or if he will be chasing birds up steep hills or foxes or deer through brush. Some breeds of dogs are more suited to certain environments than others. Other factors to consider are the type of housing available for your dog. If you have a small yard in a suburban neighborhood, you may want to consider a smaller and quieter breed of dog than if you have a large amount of acreage with no neighbors. Also consider your family environment. If you hunt rarely or if you have children, you may want a breed that will be a good family companion as well as a hunting dog. Every breed has their advantages and disadvantages and no one breed is right for every situation. Keep in mind that within a breed there are types and individual personalities so there is no cookie cutter formula for choosing the right hunting dog. Here are some of the most popular hunting dogs and some of the qualities that put them on the popularity list as the best hunting dog breed.

Labrador Retriever

The quintessential American all-around dog, the Labrador retriever has it all – intelligence, stamina, athletic ability and loving personality. The Labrador retriever has been ranked by the American Kennel Club as the most popular breed period for the past 26th years. Labs work well in a multitude of environments and terrains, but are very well suited for water work. They have a double coat to insulate them against the cold and wet and webbed feet to enhance their performance in the water. Although Labs excel at duck hunting, they are highly adaptable and do quite well hunting game birds as well. If you are looking for a dog that will hunt and be a good companion to you and your kids in the home, the Labrador retriever may be the perfect fit. Labradors are also used as police working dogs, drug sniffing dogs, and service dogs. Their intelligence and willingness to please make them highly suited to filling in as a helpmate and companion.

Golden Retriever

While not as popular as the Labrador Retriever, the Golden can hold his own in the category of America’s Sweetheart of dog breeds and one of the best hunting dog breeds. The Golden Retriever adores people and wants nothing more than to please. He is an excellent waterfowl retriever and his willingness to hunt far exceeds his impressive stamina. Compared to the Labrador, the Golden’s long, thick coat makes him less adaptable to warm weather situations and he gets quite messy in wet and muddy environments. Just like the Labrador, however, the Golden is an excellent companion for the entire family. He gets along with children and strangers quite readily and usually adapts well to pets of other species. Goldens are also popular as service and working dogs due to their tractable nature and intelligence.

Beagle

If you are a bird hunter, the beagle is probably not on your radar, but if you hunt small game, especially rabbits, the Beagle is likely your first choice of hunting dog. Beagles have been used for centuries to hunt small game in tight spaces. They are compact, high energy dogs that are also popular as pets. They can be quite vocal when hunting or greeting strangers or loved ones so you may want to take that into account if you have a lot of neighbors. Although they are small and do not need a lot of living space, they have a lot of energy and will need regular exercise to keep them occupied. Beagles are hounds and hunt by scent so it is important to ensure they have an escape proof enclosure to keep them from wandering away from home. Because of their acute sense of smell, Beagles have also been used in security to detect weapons and drugs. They are friendly loving dogs and do well in family environments but care should be used when introducing them to other small pets such as cats or pocket pets as their prey drive may overcome their friendly nature. See more information

German Shorthaired Pointer

Another versatile gun dog, the German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) excels at upland game bird hunting. They are intelligent and easy to train to point and retrieve game birds in almost any terrain. While not as suited for cold water environments as the Labrador retriever, they are used to retrieve waterfowl as well. Their short hair coat makes them well suited for warmer climates. GSPs are fast runners with a lot of stamina that lets them cover a wide range of territory. Some GSPs are even used to hunt small game although the game birds are by far the most popular use for this breed. GSPs are popular as pets as well.

Brittany (Spaniel)

The Brittany is a popular gun dog that is adept at pointing and flushing birds. They are also used for hunting ground game such as hares. They are spaniel-like in appearance but their hunting traits more closely resemble those of pointers. Because of these traits, the American Kennel Club dropped the spaniel moniker from the name and the breed is now officially known as Brittany by the registry. Brittany’s are considered a good, medium-sized, all-around gun dog. They are loyal and sweet-natured dogs that make good family companions. Spaniel’s are also high-energy so regular exercise is a must. Brittanys are very intense dogs and often require a task or job to keep them focused. If you are not planning to hunt often with your Brittany consider taking up agility or some other sport to keep your dog’s energy focused.

English Springer Spaniel

Much like the Brittany, the English Springer Spaniel is a popular upland bird dog. They are adept at flushing birds, but may not be as versatile at other hunting tasks as the Brittany. The Springer has similar personality to traits to the Brittany in that they are loyal, loving and high-energy dogs. They are also quite good at agility and obedience trials. English Springer Spaniels have more distinct bloodlines designed for field work vs. show so be sure to do your research and pick the type that works best for your needs. They are great companion dogs and tend to get along well with people and other animals. This is what adds them to the list of the best hunting dog breeds.

American Foxhound

Another of the best hunting dog breeds is a different kind of hunting dog, the American foxhound was bred, as his name suggests, to run foxes to ground. While they are still used in traditional foxhunts, complete with bugles and horses, foxhounds have also found a calling hunting deer. Not as popular as some of the other hunting breeds in this article, foxhounds share many of the qualities of them all. They are loving family companions, usually get along well with other pets, especially other dogs. They are bred to run for long distances and need regular exercise making great jogging companions. Like the beagle, they are single-minded when they catch a scent and can be quite vocal so keep that in mind if you live in with lots of neighbors. Their keen sense of smell can also get them into trouble if their enclosure is not secure enough to prevent escape.

Conclusion

This article is by no means a comprehensive list of the best hunting dog breeds. As mentioned before there are hundreds of breeds and types to choose from, each one uniquely suited to a specific prey, terrain or hunting personality. There are as many hunting breeds as there are types of prey. This article focused on the more popular breeds and hunting types, but there are hunting dogs for all game species. Obviously if you are hunting boar or mountain lion, you are not going to choose a Beagle or a Springer Spaniel. If you are looking for the best Hunting Dog Breeds, do your research. Think about what type of hunting you will be doing, whether extremely specialized or all-encompassing, and what other traits you want from your dog. Ask other hunters for their experiences with different breeds. Most importantly, understand that even though each breed has specific characteristics, each dog has a unique personality that may make him more or less suited to your requirements.

3 Popular Sporting Breeds

July 11, 2016 by Joe Scarpy

 Popular Sporting Breeds

The sporting group is among the most versatile of dog breeds, spanning all forms of spaniel, retriever, pointer, and setter, as well as the vizsla, griffon, Lagotto Romagnolo, and Spinone Italiano.  These dogs are both athletic and friendly, and NuVet Productsare able to adapt quickly to any hunting or field activity.  Three of the most popular breeds from this well-loved group are described below.

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is not only the most popular sporting breed, but is the most popular breed of dog worldwide.  In the field, this dog is an intelligent, eager to please, and reliable gun dog.  The water-loving nature of Labrador Retrievers (as well as their water-repelling coat) makes them great companions for waterfowl hunting.  Outside of the field they make wonderful family pets as they are especially tolerant of animals and children and are commonly described as having a friendly and outgoing personality.  Labrador Retrievers are large dogs, with the ideal size being 65 – 80 lbs for males, and 55 – 70 lbs for females.   Owners should beware that these highly food motivated dogs are prone to obesity, so a strict diet and exercise routine should be closely followed.  Many Labrador Retrievers live to be 10 – 12 years old.

Brittany

Another popular sporting dog, one that is smaller in size than the large Labrador Retriever, is the Brittany.  Known for its up-beat and loving personality, as well as its characteristic floppy ears, the Brittany excels as a waterfowl and small game retrieving gun dog.  The Brittany is also a great family companion when well socialized, as it has a gentle spirit and is eager to please.  However, families that are considering purchasing a Brittany should know that these dogs require regular exercise, as they are quite energetic.  This breed suffers from few health problems, is relatively low maintenance, and has a lifespan of 14 – 15 years.  With an ideal weight ranging 30 – 45 lbs, the Brittany is the perfect mid-sized companion dog.

German Shorthaired Pointer

The German Shorthaired Pointer is a quick and athletic dog known for its versatility in the field.  It is bred to be bold and independent, yet is also extremely affectionate with its owners.  In the field, German Shorthaired Pointers excel at every gun dog task, including trailing, pointing, retrieving, and flushing.  They generally love water, and can also be used for hunting waterfowl.  Unlike some dogs in the sporting group, German Shorthaired Pointers can even be used for hunting larger and more dangerous game, such as bears.  As family companions German Shorthaired Pointers are exceptionally compassionate dogs that get along well with other pets and children if properly trained.  They have extensive exercise requirements, however, and need regular and vigorous exercise in order to avoid being too hyperactive in the house.  German Shorthaired Pointers vary in size from 45 – 70 lbs.  This breed is also relatively healthy, suffering from few common health complaints.  Typical lifespan for the German Shorthaired Pointer is 12 – 14 years of age.

What is a Versatile Hunting Dog?

February 29, 2016 by Joe Scarpy

Versatile Hunting Dogs and Breeds

The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association defines versatility as a dog that has been trained and bred to reliably hunt and point game, will retrieve on both water and land and also track and retrieve wounded game both on land as well as from the water.

What should a Versatile Hunting Dog Display in the Field

In the field, versatile dogs should exhibit a staunch pointing and the desire to search for, track and retrieve game in a wirehaired_pointing_griffoncooperative manner and display the use of a fine nose.  A versatile dog needs to further prove his independence, stamina and quality of nose by transferring his search for, and retrieving of game, to the water. NAVHDA’s testing program provides an opportunity for dogs to exhibit these characteristics while remaining obedient and in control at all times. True versatile dogs should perform all tasks with enthusiasm and be willing to work with, and for, their handlers.

The versatile breeds, as we know them today, are products of Europe. No distinctive versatile hunting breed has been developed in North America.

What is NAVHDA?

The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) was founded 1969 in Goodwood, Ontario, Canada by a group of sporting dog enthusiasts, but is now based in Arlington Heights, Illinois, NAVHDA “is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to foster, promote, and improve the versatile hunting dog breeds in North America; to conserve game by using well trained reliable hunting dogs before and after the shot; and to aid in the prevention of cruelty to animals by discouraging nonselective and uncontrolled breeding, which produces unwanted and uncared for dogs.” The group has chapters in most states of the U.S. and provinces of Canada which sponsor testing and training programs.

The organization defines its work as a complement to the activities of sporting dog breed clubs and field trial organizations, created to supplement the activities of those clubs by providing a standard proven method of evaluating the performance that of all versatile hunting dogs, consistent with North American hunting practices, regardless of breed.

The NAVHDA organization defines what they describe as versatile dogs as “the dog that is bred and trained to dependably hunt and point game, to retrieve on both land and water, and to track wounded game on both land and water.” The group asserts that “The versatile breeds, as we know them today, are products of Europe. No distinctive versatile hunting breed has been developed in North America.”

Working With and Training Sporting Dog Breeds

November 12, 2015 by Joe Scarpy

Sporting dogs as a group are some of the most intelligent and easiest to train of all the breeds of dogs.

They have been bred for generations to work closely with humans and seem to have an uncanny ability to understand just what their owner is expecting of them. The sporting breeds include the spaniels, retrievers, pointers and setters, and are often called bird dogs or gun dogs. Many people mistakenly believe that tracking breeds and breeds used for Labrador Retriever Hunting Dogchasing game are also included in this category. The sporting dogs are only dogs that are used to hunt fowl and game birds, no other types of game, mammals or animals.
When working with sporting breeds it is important to remember that they are not naturally guard or watchdogs and generally are not territorial or possessive of items. They have, in fact, be bred to be willing to turn over game birds to their owners without even damaging the carcass of the bird. They tend to be very gentle and sedate dogs most of the time. If they have been used for hunting they immediately become excited when guns are handled or it looks like they are going to a hunt or an event.
Sporting breeds as a whole need more exercise than the average mid to larger sized dog. They enjoy being outdoors, exploring, and walking in new and unfamiliar territory. They can easily be trained to work off leash and naturally will German Shorthair Pointerrespond well to verbal, hand signal and even whistle commands. A sporting dog generally has a lot of patience and will sit for long periods of time without moving, only to take off in a split second when commanded to do so.
Most of the sporting breeds including spaniels, retrievers and many of the setters absolutely love to be in the water. When on a walk or even just getting out of the car for a break they are likely to head straight for a pond or ditch if there is water present. Even the pointers may be inclined to go for a good swim even though generally pointers and setters are not used in hunting waterfowl.
Training a sporting dog to hunt is something that is entirely up to the owner. Most dogs of the breed will naturally use some aspects of their behavior in everyday activities. Pointers and setters may naturally point or indicate birds or even farmyard chickens or ducks even without any formal training. Spaniels and retrievers tend to excel at games such as fetch or even Frisbee even though they may have had little training.

Clubs and Organizations

If you are considering training your sporting dog for competitions consider joining a sporting dog group or organization (HRC, AKC, Master National, NAVHDA, GSPCA) and attend field trials or events to learn about this sport. These dogs require positive training and do not do well with harsh or punishment based methods. They love to please their owners and with clear direction and consistent commands and training they will soon understand exactly what you want.

Hypoallergenic Sporting Dogs – Some Of The Most-Opted Breeds!

August 2, 2014 by Joe Scarpy

Some Of The Most-Opted Breeds for Hypoallergenic Sporting Dogs!

As a modern day pet owner, there are many choices before you for the type of dog you can choose to have, depending on your temperament, activity levels, space constraints or freedom besides budget of after-care facilities and how much time you can spend looking after your furry four-legged friend. For even though a dog is a man’s best friend, the purpose

Kerry Blue terrier Huntingof choosing to keep a dog may be different for different people: some may be looking for security, some for companionship of the silent kind, some for hobby breeding and yet others for active sports such as hunting.

If the latter category is what you fall under, then you need to find out the best kind of hunting dog for your personal needs and this becomes an even more complicated decision to make if you suffer from moderate to severe allergies, which can be triggered off by the wrong choice of a sporting dog. Therefore, pet health experts advise such person to opt for a hypoallergenic hunting dog that has an easy temperament but is intelligent, responsive to commands and playful outside of the sporting scene too.

This includes breeds such as the Australian Terrier, Poodle and Kerry Blue terrier that are typically used to hunt small toStandard Poodle Hunting large game besides killing vermin that often carry disease. These breeds also make for good pets even in households that have children and elderly members as they are very playful and affectionate too while being easy to train with a firm handler and without much fuss.

Great sporting partners, the above breed of hypoallergenic hunting dogs are also advantageous for owners that do not want to spend a lot of time in cleaning up great tufts of hair and for those that suffer from bad allergies since they have short coats which are soft and thin like human hair, therefore easy to maintain with simple, regular brushing and shampooing.

These being medium sized dogs are also likely to be appreciated by those pet-owners that are not too keen on fussy grooming but would still like to have a furry friend with less shedding problems that aggravate allergies associated with bigger dogs or smaller, more lush-furred dogs.

As far as the Poodle is concerned, the virtues of it being a hunting dog are equally weighed against it being a friendly dog at the time though it is not generally noisy unless trained to be so; it loves its walks, is great for active people and has a long lifespan though they are prone to suffering assorted health problems with age.

The preferred mice and rat killer, the Australian Terrier too is blessed with a happy disposition and has long hair that does not shed in bulk like other dogs its size; a close crop of the coat will ensure you have nothing to worry about when bringing one of these lovable dogs home -or on a hunting trip!

If these don’t appeal, the choice of a Kerry Blue Terrier is always open: a big head and chest, soft and curly coat and lesser hassles of brushing are what make it a favorite hypoallergenic hunting dog for many.
