Caring For Your Dogs Pads

March 1, 2017 by Joe Scarpy

Treating Your Dog’s Pads

The health of your dog’s feet is important – especially when your gun dog is working in cold and wet conditions.  Tips for treatment and preventative care for your pet’s feet are discussed here.

Treating a Laceration

Waterfowl Decals

Anything can happen in the field, which is why it is necessary to keep a first aid kit on hand.  If your pet ever suffers a puncture wound or laceration to its paw pad, the first step is to clean the area thoroughly. Saline solution or bottled water is recommended.  Next, wrap your dog’s paw with gauze or strips of fabric in order to stop the bleeding and keep the area from becoming infected.  Seek treatment for your dog’s injury as soon as possible, and watch vigilantly for signs of infection, such as redness or swelling.  Paw injuries can be slow to heal, so it is important to follow the veterinarian’s instructions as closely as possible.

Protecting Paw Pads

A working dog’s paw pads can become worn down and sore, especially during cooler months.  If your dog is showing signs of soreness, a salve or ointment can remedy the problem.  Protective salves which coat the paw and shield sensitive areas from cold and damp conditions are widely available.  Simply rub the salve into the paw before loading up your dog.  To soothe a sore paw, restorative ointments that contain vitamins, minerals, and moisturizers can also be used.

Inspect the Feet
Every time your dog returns from a day in the field you should inspect his or her feet.  Look for any object that may have punctured your dog’s pad, such as a briar or thorn.  Spread your dog’s toes and investigate the webbing to ensure it is free from cuts and abrasions.  Feel the pads for rough or sensitive areas, and apply moisturizer as needed.  While you are

inspecting the feet, it is also worthwhile to check for ticks or grass awns that may be stuck in your dog’s coat.

Ultimately, a dog that comes up lame is no use in the field.  Avoid lengthy recovery times by preventing injury to your dog’s sensitive feet.  Dogs should be properly conditioned to the rigors of an all-day field session before the first hunt of the season.  Owners should also take special care in cold, wet, and snowy conditions to keep a dog’s paws healthy by providing care before, during, and after the hunt.

Saving your Pet with CPR

August 23, 2016 by Joe Scarpy

Saving your Pet with CPR…

You never know if or when you may ever need it, but this is a great pet CPR First-Aid reference for any owner to have.

I have personally had to revive a puppy that the mother laid on with these tips on Saving your Pet with CPR and was lucky enough to have caught it in time and was able to revive the pup.  I also know another trainer that has had to use this with at least one dog.

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the following chart.  Hopefully you will never need to use it, but if you do you will have the general knowledge to reference!

How to Relieve Hot Spots in Dogs

July 19, 2016 by Joe Scarpy

Re-leaving Hot Spots in Dogs

Dogs and fleas go hand in hand, and sometimes these pests are downright unavoidable.  Besides being annoying insects, fleas can lead to skin infections called hot spots that are uncomfortable and cause incessant scratching and 200discomfort.  Fortunately for dogs and owners, NuVet Hot Spot Treatment Spray provides necessary relief for pets.

What Does a Hot Spot Look Like?

NuVet Hot Spot TreatmentA hot spot is a red, inflamed, and open area of the skin that a dog excessively licks or scratches.  Hot spots can be small, such as the size of a nickel or dime, or grow to be quite large, encompassing more area than a deck of cards.  Hot spots typically look moist, and may ooze a clear or yellow liquid.

What Causes Hot Spots?

When a flea chooses your dog as a host, it sucks blood from your pet in order to nourish its offspring.  Many dogs are allergic to the saliva that is passed from the flea to your dog, causing an allergic reaction.  When a dog excessively scratches at flea bites, bacteria can enter areas of broken skin, causing an infection known as pyotraumatic dermatitis.  In addition to fleas, dogs can develop hot spots from any other irritation, including a scratch from a thorn bush that becomes infected or even a vaccination site that becomes irritated.

How Can I Treat my Dog’s Hot Spot?

The best way to treat a hot spot is to get your dog to leave the affected area alone.  For many dogs and owners, this task is easier said than done.  A common solution is to spray a relieving spray onto the hot spot which will provide relief to the dog’s itchy and painful symptoms.  NuVet’s Hot Spot Treatment Spray contains calming eucalyptus and aloe vera that provides immediate cooling relief without a stinging sensation.  By providing relief to the area, the dog will be less tempted to further irritate the hot spot by licking or scratching, allowing the infection to heal naturally.  In addition to hot spots, this spray can also provide relief to other skin ailments, such as eczema and dermatitis.

How Can I Prevent Hot Spots?

Unfortunately, hot spots are something that nearly every dog will experience at least once during his or her life.  However, there are a number of ways to minimize the chances of your dog developing this painful condition.  The most important preventative step is to have your dog on a year-round flea preventative, such as a topical gel, an oral tablet, or through use of a flea collar.  Since fleas are the number one cause of hot spots, preventing their infestation is an important step that pet owners can take in lowering a dog’s risk.  Next, be vigilant when your pet is outside about making sure that he or she does not come in contact with plants that may cause skin irritation or scratches.  For instance, brushing up against a thorn bush can introduce bacteria into the wound, leading to a hot spot later.  Since hot spots are not entirely preventable, it is always a good idea to have a hot spot relieving spray on hand!

Canine Ear Infections: Signs, Symptoms, and Prevention

July 16, 2016 by Joe Scarpy

Signs, Symptoms, and Prevention of Canine Ear Infections

Unfortunately for dogs, ear infections and irritation are just one fact of life that many must live with.  For floppy-eared Nu Vet Productsdogs, dogs that love to swim, and breeds that are prone to excessive ear wax production, the chances of developing recurring ear infections is extremely high.  Fortunately, there are steps that pet owners can take to prevent the dangers and discomfort of regular ear issues.  Thanks to NuVet Therapeutic Ear Treatment, ear infections can become a thing of the past.

What causes ear infections in dogs?

There are a number of reasons a dog may suffer from this painful condition.  At the most basic level, an ear infection is simply an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria in the ear that causes pain, swelling, and discomfort.  Floppy eared dogs are more likely to trap these bacteria in the ear, as are breeds that have excessive ear hair growth, such as poodles, or dogs that naturally produce a lot of ear wax, like German Shepherds.  In addition, certain parasites, such as ear mites, can cause irritation that leads to infection.

How do I know my dog has an ear infection?

NuVet ProductsThere are many telltale signs that indicate your dog is suffering from ear discomfort.  The most common symptom is excessive head shaking or pawing at the ears.  A dog with a serious infection may even tilt its head to one side.  If you look into the ear, the sensitive skin may appear red and inflamed, and you may notice a yeast-like odor.  Ear wax may appear unusually dark or tar-like, and in the case of ear mites, you may notice what looks like coffee grounds inside your pet’s ear.

How can I prevent ear infections in my dog?

The best way to prevent an ear infection is to regularly clean your dog’s ears with a specially formulated ear cleaning solution.  An ear wash will flush the ear of wax build up while removing debris and helping restore the sensitive tissue to the proper pH.  If bacteria or yeast is present, the ear wash will remove the bacteria while neutralizing odors.

How to Clean a Dog’s Ears

To clean your pet’s ears, gently squirt the solution into the ear canal and massage the base of your dog’s ear in order to distribute the solution.  Allow your dog to shake his or her head, and then use a q-tip or a Kleenex to dry the external portions of the ear.  Never place an object directly into your dog’s ear canal, as you can easily damage sensitive tissues.  The loosened ear wax and debris that is not visible will naturally work its way out of the ear.

Why use NuVet Therapeutic Ear Treatment?

What are the benefits of NuVet’s ear cleaning solution?  This formulation is gentle enough for everyday use, which is perfect for dogs especially prone to ear problems.  Ingredients such as eucalyptus and aloe vera soothe irritated skin and naturally reduce inflammation.  In addition, this formula is proven to remove any unsavory odors caused by yeast or bacteria.

Health and Safety for your Sporting and Hunting Dog

June 16, 2016 by Joe Scarpy

Keep Your Hunting Dog Safe in The Field

Would you know what to do in case disaster struck while out in the field with your hunting or sporting dog?  Despite the Dog First Aidresiliency of most hunting/sporting breeds, these pets often encounter a unique set of threats when out on a hunt or in the field with their owners.  Listed below are canine first aid tips, including how to put together a pet first aid kit.

Assembling a K9 First Aid Kit

What items belong in a dog first aid kit?  A good rule of thumb is that canine first aid is similar to human first aid, and many injuries or illnesses can be treated similarly.  The bare necessities of any good kit includes:

-a first aid guide
-hydrogen peroxide
-saline solution
-Styptic pencil
-thermometer/lubricant
-tourniquet
-gloves
-blanket
-tweezers
-scissors
-triple antibiotic ointment
-gauze
-cotton swabs
-veterinary self-cling wrap
-plastic syringe
-material for splint

Additional items specifically geared towards field dogs include:

-pad healing product to protect paw abrasions
-skin staples
-insecticidal ear wash
-Benadryl
-needle nose pliers
-super glue
-trauma shears
-knife
-canine aspirin
-salt
-sugar
-bottled water

There are also several excellent pre-assembled Dog Specific First-Aid Kits on the market.

First Aid in the Field

K-9 First Aid KitA field emergency requires immediate attention and quick-thinking.  Take the necessary time to stabilize your dog, but then seek professional help as quickly as possible.  Listed below are common emergencies and how to treat them.

Dehydration

Especially on warm days, dehydration can hit field dogs who are too excited (or too focused on their job) to stop and drink water.  Signs of dehydration include loss of elasticity in the skin, dry/sticky gums, and thick saliva.  In severe cases, the dog may collapse.  If you fear your dog may be dehydrated, prepare an electrolyte solution containing 1 liter of water, ½ teaspoon of salt, and 3 tablespoons of sugar.  Every 15 minutes, give your dog a ¼ of the solution, continually monitoring symptoms.

Wounds

A common injury among field dogs is flesh founds, which can arise from any number of sources.  The best way to clean a wound is to rinse the area with saline solution (avoid harsh disinfectants, such as hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol, as these may damage the exposed flesh).  If no saline solution is available, you can make your own using 1 tablespoon of salt for every gallon of water.  Next, apply antibiotic ointment to the wound and cover with gauze and medical tape.  If stitches are necessary, do not apply antibiotic ointment to the area but simply clean the wound, cover the injury, and get your dog to the nearest veterinarian immediately.

Broken Bone or Sprain

It can be impossible to tell the difference between a sprain, strain, or broken bone without an x-ray, so each injury should be treated similarly until a proper diagnosis can be made.  If your dog is limping, unwilling (or unable) to put weight on the affected leg, or has a visibly broken bone, the best course of action is to carefully immobilize the area by making a splint.  Common emergency splint material includes cardboard or a rolled up newspaper.  Next, tape the splint and then carry your dog (if possible) to the nearest veterinarian.  If your dog is in pain, administer the recommended dosage of aspirin.  Owners of hunting/sporting dogs may also want to ask their veterinarian for a prescription for Tramadol, which will not only relieve pain, but also induce drowsiness in the dog.
