Adding Human Food To Your Dog’s Diet
If you are a dog owner, you know that dogs are omnivores. Apart from meat, they naturally seek out greens and fruits when they are in the wild. A good thing is that you don’t have to feed your dog only a specialized dog food, but also some human foods.
Of course, there are human foods which are harmful to dogs, such as chocolate, grapes or onions, but there are also foods that you can safely add to your dog’s diet. In this article you will see which human foods are good for dogs.
Vegetables
Dogs enjoy carrots and they can safely eat them. Carrots are a great source of fiber, vitamins and minerals that can improve your dog’s digestive health, but also the health of his skin and coat. You can also use yellow and green beans and mix them into your dog’s food. Other vegetables that are good for your dog are broccoli, cauliflower, kale, lettuce, peppers, sweet potato, parsley, etc.
Fruits
You can also feed your dog apples but they should be washed thoroughly. Apples are a great source of fiber and vitamins A and C. Also, you should not remove apple skin because it is a natural antioxidant. But, you should remove apple seeds because they may be toxic to dogs. Dogs also love bananas, which are a great source of vitamins and minerals that are essential for your dog’s health. You can also add berries to your dog’s diet, such as strawberries, blackberries or bluberries. Many dogs also love pineapple and melons and you can safely feed them these delicious fruits.
Yogurt
You can feed your dog yogurt, which can help in building up the flora in the intestines of your dog. You should use yogurts that contain active bacteria and that are sugar free. Yogurt can be a great addition to your dog’s diet because it is high in protein and calcium. But, you should have in mind that many dogs are lactose intolerant, so you should start with a small amount. It is best to add a spoonful of yogurt to your dog’s food and your dog will certainly love it.
Peanut Butter
Peanut butter can also be added to a dog’s regular food. Choose creamy peanut butter in order to avoid choking. You can spread peanut butter on banana or apple slices and use it as a snack for your dog.
Eggs
Cooked eggs are a great source of protein and they can be a delicious treat for your dog. Also, egg shells can be good for your dog.
Meat
It is best to give your dog poultry, red meats and organs, but it is important to cook them well, unless your dog is on a raw diet. But, you should never feed your dog cooked chicken bones.
Fish
Dogs can eat fish, but it must be cooked well. Raw fish may carry parasites and it can lead to food poisoning. Also, you should remove all the bones. It is best to choose canned tuna or salmon to serve your dog.
Grains
Cooked oatmeal, brown and white rice can be a healthy treat for your dog. They will provide carbohydrates and they will give energy to your dog.
If you decide to feed your dog a certain human food, you should start with small amounts. You have to see how the dog will react to this food. Human foods should form not more than 25% of a dog’s diet. Adding human foods to your dog’s diet will be a nice surprise for your dog. But, remember that moderation is the key of a good health.
