Dog Training With the Use of Drone
At the SHOT Show 2017 held in Las Vegas this past January, Tom Dokken unveiled his newest training tool: The TD100 drone. This drone is set to revolutionize retriever and tracker training.
One of the most difficult things for a retriever to learn is to look into the sky to mark a fallen bird. Instead, hunters inadvertently reinforce forward vision with the use of launchers and thrown dummies/birds. The Dokken TD100 drone overcomes this difficulty.
To use the drone for training, a hunter simply attaches a dead bird, dummy, or live bird in a mesh bag to the underside of the drone. Then the hunter uses the simple controls to get the drone into the air. This process is similar to flying a remote-controlled airplane. The Dokken TD100 drone uses GPS technology which allows for the drone to hover in one area above the field. Additionally, you can program the drone to automatically return to a “home” location. With a single touch of a button on the transmitter the drone will drop the dummy, duck, pigeon, or other game bird for your dog to retrieve. Learning how to operate the drone takes as little as 5 minutes.
You can also use the TD-100 drone for tracking. For instance, you can attach a 10 foot rag to the drone that has been saturated with liquid scent. You can then use the drone to hover over an area in the field and drag the scented rag in the grass before depositing it in an area away from your dog. In this way you can teach your dog to track the game scent, instead of the scent of your foot prints.
With the TD100 drone the way retrievers and gun dogs are trained will be forever changed. Not only does the drone overcome common limitations that hunters face when training their dogs, but this will be a fun tool to use in the field that will save time, money, and frustration over the long run.
