Six Considerations when Boarding your Dog
Once your vacation plans are set, it is time to make arrangements for your dog. Choosing the right kennel can be tough, especially if you have any special concerns about your pup. Listed here are six considerations that must be made when choosing the perfect kennel for your pet.
Anxiety
Many dog owners worry that their dogs will miss them when they are away. However, in the majority of cases, your dog will be just fine. Although dogs bond strongly with their owners, they are also highly adaptable animals. Your dog will quickly pick up on a different routine of exercise, eating, and sleeping.
Exercise
How much exercise will your dog receive when you are away? For many dogs, if you are leaving them for a short trip (i.e. 48 hours) exercise is not a big concern. However, for longer trips you should consider a larger kennel run or paying extra for walks or playtime. Many dogs, though, will enjoy the opportunity for uninterrupted sleep.
Food and Medicine
Before booking your dog’s stay, ask about the kennel’s policy on special diets and medications. Some facilities prefer to feed their own food, and you should check in advance that this option is both high quality and a food that will sit well in your dog’s stomach. Additionally, there may be a fee for administering medications – if the kennel agrees to give medications in the first place (some do not).
Health Concerns
A boarding kennel should require that your dog be up to date on vaccinations. While some kennels are trending towards not requiring the bordatella (kennel cough) vaccine, you should be required to sign a waiver or provide a note from your veterinarian before bringing an unvaccinated dog for boarding. If your dog is being boarded for the first time, make sure to take a copy of your dog’s vet records when you drop off your pet.
Cleanliness
A commercial kennel should be spotless. Before you make reservations for your dog, take a tour of the facility. The kennel should pass the “sniff test.” A strong urine, feces, or foul odor should raise an immediate red flag.
Reuniting with your Dog
Even though you probably missed your dog more than he or she missed you, that doesn’t mean your pup won’t be happy to see you. Be prepared for an excited dog when you return to pick him or her up, complete with lots of love and affection.
