Tips for Training Your Retriever

March 1, 2021 by Joe Scarpy Leave a Comment

5 Tips for Retriever Training

What goes into developing a confident and reliable retriever for your hunting needs?  Listed below are five of the most important training components when starting a young retriever.

Basic Obedience

Before you can begin training your retriever to mark and fetch, it should first develop a solid foundation in basic obedience.  Whether you train your dog yourself or attend a basic obedience class, you should not move on to any hunting-related skills until your pet has mastered commands such as Sit, Here, Heel and No.

Rock Solid Recall while Distracted

Next, your dog needs to develop a reliable recall that is consistent 100% of the time, no matter the distractions presented.  After your dog has mastered recall in the classroom or yard, work on long-range recall by using a check cord to remind your dog the intended command.  When you are confident in your pet’s abilities, move to off-leash training with the help of an electronic collar.

Steadying Your Retiever

A retriever needs to sit by the hunter at all times and not leave the owner’s side until he or she is sent to retrieve the bird.  For some retrievers, this is a difficult task due to their excitement.  Once your dog has mastered basic obedience, steadying is the next step which is to ensure your dog honors his or her commands at all times.  The first step is to use a prong collar to give your pet leash commands if it tries to break position.  Once your dog is steady with the collar and lead, use an electronic collar to provide corrections if your dog strays.  You can practice this step long before your dog is ready to hunt with you by using a place board and practicing long sit/stay commands.  If your dog cannot master this skill with few distractions, it will have a difficult time doing so when the reward is the retrieval.

Sit at the Sound of Gunfire

As an extension of steadying your dog should learn from a very young age that gunfire does not automatically mean it is time to retrieve.  By teaching the dog to dissociate the sound of the gun with a downed bird, you can help him or her associate the sound of a gun with calmness, leading to full attention on the hunter’s commands.

Conditioned Retrieve

Conditioned retrieve refers to teaching a dog to fetch on command, instead of out of natural instinct.  There are two common ways to teach force fetching, mainly with negative reinforcement or positive reinforcement.  The first method involves applying uncomfortable pressure to the dog, typically its ear or toes, and teaching the dog that the only way to turn off the discomfort is to take something into its mouth, like a dowel or bumper.  Over time, retrieval commands are overlaid.  The second method is common among the British and is picking up steam in America.  Here, the dog is trained to retrieve using positive reinforcement only, by engaging the dog with a dowel or dummy.  At first, the dog is rewarded for simply interacting with the dummy; next, the dog is rewarded for picking up the dummy; next the dog is caught to “come,” and so on.  Overall, there is not a right or wrong way to go about retriever training, but these five basic skills are paramount to having a well-behaved dog in the field.

10 Most Important Bird Dog Supplies

June 25, 2020 by Joe Scarpy Leave a Comment

The Top 10 Most Important Bird Dog Supplies

Do you have everything you need in order to train your dog and keep him or her safe in the field?  Listed here are ten of the most important bird dog supplies that every hunter should own.

Dog Collar
All dogs, no matter if they leave the house or not, should have a dog collar with at least the owner’s identification and proof of rabies vaccination.  Never rely solely on a microchip or your dog’s obedience training, as accidents can happen and a dog collar is one of the simplest ways for the person who finds your dog to get into contact with you.

Kennel
The safest way for your dog to travel is in a sturdy kennel.  Whether you plan to place the kennel in the back of a pickup truck or strapped onto the back seat of a car, there is a crate that fits your needs.

First Aid Kit
Accidents can happen anywhere, especially in the field.  Be prepared to handle any emergency that may arise from minor scrapes to gaping flesh-wounds to broken bones by having a well-stocked first aid kit.

Bumpers/Dummies
When starting your hunting dog’s training, bumpers and dummies are essential bird dog supplies.  These items help your dog learn important skills such as having a soft mouth and retrieval without starting them on live birds too early.

Bird Scent
Bumpers and dummies should be bathed in bird scent or bird wings in order to help your dog learn the scent of your game of choice.

Bird Launcher
No matter what type of bird dog you are training, a bird launcher can be beneficial for a number of reasons.  Able to launch birds up to a half mile away, a bird launcher is an important bird dog supply for pointers, retrievers, and flushers.

Training Collar
Very few hunting dogs are trained without the use of a collar of some sort, such as a choke chain, prong collar, or electronic collar.  Often, a hunter uses all three items at some point in the dog’s development.  Certain commands, such as long-range recall, are made easier with e-collars which can reliably get the dog’s attention.

Dog Training Book or DVD
Especially if you are training a dog for the first time a training book or DVD is among the essential bird dog supplies.  If this is your first or fiftieth dog, there are always new things to learn especially as a dog’s individual personality is made known.

Blanks
Every bird dog must be conditioned to the sound of guns.  However, one of the worst ways to do so is to shoot a shotgun over the dog’s head to test its response, which can ultimately create a gun shy dog.  A bird dog should be slowly conditioned to louder and louder noises, and blanks are great way to start this process.

Tracking Collar
Finally, a tracking collar is a great way to ensure you don’t lose your dog during a hunt.  These collars contain GPS units that help you pinpoint your dog’s location at all times.

Gun Shyness in Dogs is a Top Concern Among Hunters

November 28, 2018 by Joe Scarpy Leave a Comment

Gun Shyness in Dogs

Gun shyness in dogs is a top concern among hunters.  In most instances, the problem is directly related to introducing gunfire in the wrong way.

Hunters should take a progressive approach when conditioning their dogs to loud noises.  Wait until your dog is 8 months of age or older. Your dog should be mature, confident, marking well, and fired up about retrieving.

To begin, start with a .22 blank, popper, or a #209 primer.  Place the popper in your training bag, and pull the trigger as you throw a bumper.  Your dog will be more interested in the bumper than the pop, and will become easily conditioned to the sound.  Over time, move closer to your dog during this exercise.

When you are confident that your dog is comfortable with the sound of the pop, move on to retrieving drills with a .410 shotgun.  This type of gunfire is ideal, because it is not too loud for these initial encounters. Enlist the help of a friend, and have him or her stand at a distance from you and your dog.  This person will toss a bumper in the air, and then fire the gun. Again, your dog should be more interested in the flying bumper than the sound of the gun, and conditioning should be easy at this point.  Enthusiasm and positive praise from you or the handler is also important.

When introducing your dog to gunfire, be progressive in your approach and make haste slowly.  Being conservative throughout this process is far better than delaying your training – and possibly your hunt – while you overcome gun-shyness.

Sit, Steadying & Honoring – Teaching Your Dog Patience

March 27, 2018 by Joe Scarpy Leave a Comment

Refining Your Dog – Sit, Steadying & Honoring – Teaching Patience

Sitting, steadying, and honoring are three basic commands that are necessary when bringing multiple dogs into the field.  Here, the importance of the sit command will be discussed, as well as how to train your dog to honor and steady when hunting with a buddy and his or her dog.

The sit command is the basic foundation for many obedience skills, especially steadying and honoring.  A dog must be disciplined enough to sit and stay by your side while another dog gets a bird. Without these vital skills, dogs can become unruly, out of control, and steal another hunter’s game.  Since retrievers love nothing more than to bring back a bird, steadying and honoring requires practice. Before your dog can begin to learn these commands, he or she must be well-acquainted with “sit,” so you should proof your dog of this skill in multiple settings.

Once your dog is well acquainted to sit, take your dog, a buddy, his or her dog, and a bag of bumpers to a yard or field.  Take turns tossing a bumper and sending your dogs separately after the mark.

There are a couple components that are crucial to this drill’s success.  One is good timing. If your dog makes a move out of turn, correction must be immediate.  A heeling stick or electronic collar can be used to keep your dog in check. Additionally, reward must be given in a timely manner to acknowledge that your dog did the right thing in remaining calm and steady.

Practice and repetition are also important.  Do not send your dog immediately after you have thrown the bumper, as this can reinforce bad habits.  Instead, make your dog sit and wait before sending him or her. Be mindful of the commands you use. For instance, if you put  your hand down and then send your dog, put your hand down and leave it there for a short duration before giving the verbal command.  Otherwise, your dog will spring forward after any small movement that you make with your hand, hindering his or her ability to stay steady.  Do not rush this process.

After your dog becomes really good at this drill, increase the difficulty.  Go to a pond with blanks and dead birds. Simulate a real hunt, including your own excitement when a bird goes down.  When your dog is honoring and steadying in this environment, you know that he or she is ready for the real thing.

Quartering a Field – Teaching a dog to Quarter in the Field

October 17, 2017 by Joe Scarpy Leave a Comment

Teaching a dog to Quarter in the Field – Quartering a Field

Regardless of where you live,Teaching a dog to Quarter in the Field is the same. Most all field-bred sporting dogs love working and quartering a field.  What is quartering?  This term simply means having your dog work in front of you to find birds.  For example, a lab will go quartering to find a cripple that has been knocked down into thick brush.  This skill is very simple to teach.  In fact, the most difficult aspect is determining which command you will use:  “find ‘em” or “hunt ‘em up.”

Step 1

Like any skill, quartering should be taught over a series of days, in small increments.  On day one, you should start by throwing a bumper in front of your dog.  It does not matter if your retriever sees the bumper fall.  Give your dog the command to find the bumper, and then give him or her praise for a job well done.

Next, throw a bumper in the opposite direction from the first bumper that you threw, such that your dog is working side-to-side in front of your location.  Continue throwing side-to-side while saying the command you have chosen.  This drill should be a lot of fun for your dog.  As your dog progresses and begins to understand the point of this exercise, throw a couple a bumpers at a time.  For the first 1 – 2 days, simply spend 15 minutes just throwing bumpers and having your dog retrieve them in a back and forth manner.

Step 2

The next step of the quartering process is to establish bumpers by dropping them and remembering where they are.  The overall goal is to be able to walk through an “aisle” with bumpers on either side and for your dog to work side-to-side to find them.  After you have established the bumpers, leave the area and return a few minutes later.  Stand facing the area where the bumpers have been dropped and give your dog the “find ‘em” command.

Overall, it is important that this drill involves no collar pressure; it should simply be a fun game to your pet.

Step 3
Now that your dog understands what you are doing, pepper an area with bumpers or birds to get your dog really excited.  If you do not have birds, attach duck feathers to your bumpers.  Use the space that you have available to complete this drill – it can be effectively done in a yard that is 25 yards long, or 500 yards long.  Start in low cover and send your dog into the highly peppered area by giving the proper command.

The most important aspect of this drill is that your dog learns to use his or her nose.  If you knock a duck into heavy cover but do not know where it is, your dog should understand the concept of “find ‘em” or “hunt ‘em up.”

Step 4

Finally, the last step in teaching a dog to quarter in the field is to throw a bumper into thick cover and walk away.  Stay away from the area for 10 – 15 minutes.  Then, when you turn back, give your dog the command to find the bumper.  Your dog should learn that whichever direction you are facing, he or she will find a bird.
