Choosing the Style of Wireless Fence That is Best for You?

A wireless fence is a great way to maintain the look of your yard while keeping your pets contained.  With a number of styles available, which is best for you and your needs?

Types of Fences

Underground Fence
An underground (or invisible) fence is likely the style that people think of when they hear the words “wireless fence.”  This fence contains wires that are buried underground along your property line.  Your dog wears a radio receiver on its collar and receives an electronic shock when attempting to cross the plane of the fence.

Wireless Fence

A wireless fence is similar to an underground fence in terms of functionality (i.e. the dog wears a radio receiver and receives a shock when the fence boundary is met), but is implemented differently.  For a wireless fence a transmitter is plugged into an outside outlet and then a radio frequency is emitted in an adjustable circle around the transmitter.

Wireless Barrier

A wireless barrier is similar to the wireless fence, except that it is intended to keep a dog away from an area as opposed to contained inside one.  The area of the barrier is significantly smaller, such as a 16 foot circle, and is intended to protect areas in the yard such as a garden.

 

Questions to Ask Yourself
When deciding which fencing style is right for you there are a number of questions to ask yourself in order to make your decision easier.

How often is your dog outside?
Is your dog just outside long enough to potty, or does he or she spend an appreciable amount of time in the yard?  If your dog is rarely outside a wireless fence may be best, while if your dog is frequently in the yard, an invisible fence is likely the better solution.

Do you travel?
Do you travel often with your pet and need a way to safely contain your dog at various points of your journey?  A wireless fence can travel wherever you go and can be used anywhere an outlet is available.  This option is perfect if visiting friends without a fenced in yard.

Do you plan to move?
If you plan to move within the next few years it may not be worth the hassle to install an invisible fence.  In this case, a wireless fence may be more suitable.

Do you have an outdoor outlet?
A downside to a wireless fence is that you need an outdoor outlet that is within the area of containment.  An invisible fence, on the other hand, can be plugged into the basement or a garage.

Do you want your dog to have access to the entire property?
If you have a lot of acreage and you want your dog to have access to the entire area, an invisible fence is the better option.  With this style of fencing you can ensure that every corner is contained, whereas with a wireless fence you would have to place the transmitter in the dead center of your property in order to contain the entire area.
