Tick Virus that can effect Your Dog and Pets

May 3, 2022 by Joe Scarpy

Ticks and your dog

As any pet owner knows, our furry friends are susceptible to a variety of parasites, including fleas, mites, and ticks. Of these, ticks are perhaps the most dangerous, as they can transmit a number of serious diseases, including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. That’s why it’s so important to check your pet for ticks after spending any time outside. If you find a tick on your dog or cat, immediately remove it using specialized removal tool. If a tick remains unnoticed on your pet for a long period of time, tick paralysis may occur. So be sure to keep an eye out for these pesky critters, and protect your pets from the dangers of tick-borne illness.

Symptoms of this include:

  • Change of barking pitch
  • Difficult breathing
  • Vomiting
  • Paralysis

If tick paralysis is left untreated, it can lead to death.

Ticks and your dog

Ticks are parasites that attach themselves to their host in order to feed on their blood. Although they are most commonly found on pets, they can also be found on humans. Ticks can carry a number of diseases, including Lyme disease, which can be transmitted to both pets and humans. Applying a flea and tick product to your pet is certainly a good idea, but be sure you are using the correct type: most products meant for dogs are toxic to cats. If you’re not sure which product to use, ask your veterinarian for recommendations. In addition, be sure to check your pet regularly for ticks, and remove any that you find right away. By taking these simple precautions, you can help protect your pet – and yourself – from tick-borne illnesses.

Tips for At-Home Grooming

August 16, 2016 by Joe Scarpy

Grooming At Home

Taking your pet to the groomer may be easy and convenient, but it can also be expensive, time-consuming, and some dogs are downright terrified of being handled by unfamiliar people.  For many reasons, pet owners turn to grooming their dogs at-home in order to save time, money, and stress.  Listed below are all the products you need to groom your dog at home.

Finding the Right Shampoo

There are a number of shampoo types available, but which is the right one for your pet?  If your dog is young or suffers from extremely sensitive skin, NuVet’s Puppy & Kitten Shampoo is a good choice.  Formulated specially for the sensitive skin of young pets, Puppy & Kitten shampoo is hypoallergenic and pH balanced, with no harsh soaps or detergents.

NuVet Products

Is your dog one of the millions of pets in America that is affected by dry, flaky skin, hot spots, or allergies?  If so, NuVet Hot Spot Tea Tree Shampoo is recommended.  Not just for hot spots relief, this tea tree formulated solution provides instant relief to redness, irritation, and inflammation thanks to soothing ingredients such as coconut oil, tea tree oil, and Vitamins A, D, and E.  With no alcohol, soaps, or detergents, pets with sensitive skin won’t suffer from dry skin after a bath, which is important for their comfort.

If your dog is prone to being smelly, an odor eliminating shampoo, like NuVet Odor Control Pet Shampoo is a necessity.  This product combines the soap, alcohol, and detergent free properties of other NuVet shampoos with almond oil, fruit, and floral extracts to eliminate odors.

Once you find the best shampoo for your dog’s needs, invest in a highly absorbent towel to make drying and brushing after the bath a breeze, and to also eliminate the “wet dog” smell around the house.

Finishing Touches

To give your pet the full grooming treatment, there are a number of additional services that you can provide for your pet at home.  A common part of a full-service groom is an ear cleaning.  Regular ear treatments are important in order to keep ear mites, infections, and inflammation away.  Purchase a gentle ear cleaner, such as NuVet Therapeutic Ear Treatment for this task.  Another common grooming component is a nail trim.  If your pet will allow it, trim his or her nails after the bath in order to keep paws comfortable.  Pet parents should also invest in a good pair of straight-edge scissor to trim feet, tail, muzzle, and fur around the eyes if your dog is receiving a bath in between haircuts.

In Between Baths

Does your pet have a tendency to develop matted or clumped fur in between grooming appointments?  Or, is your dog resistant to the bathing process in general?  A good alternative to a bath is a conditioning spray, which not only soothes sensitive skin, but acts as a dry shampoo as well.  NuVet’s Conditioning Oatmeal Spray conditions skin and fur while reducing redness, itchiness, and inflammation.

Relieving Your Dogs Joint Pain

August 1, 2016 by Joe Scarpy

Relieving Joint Pain with NuJoint

Just as with humans, inflammation and joint pain are common issues with dogs.  While a number of remedies exist, such as medications, injections, and even surgeries, many owners wish to treat their pets in as natural a method as possible.  With NuVet NuJoint DS K-9 Wafers and NuJoint Plus Wafers, natural relief is possible.

What causes joint pain in dogs?

There are a number of reasons why dogs may develop joint problems later in life.  A main contributing factor is obesity, where an animal is at least 20% heavier than its ideal weight.  The additional weight puts unnecessary stress on joints, Hip dysplasiaespecially when climbing steps or jumping on/off the couch, leading to degeneration of cartilage between knee, “elbow,” and hip joints.  A second cause is genetics.  Some breeds, especially German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers, are prone to developing painful hip dysplasia.  Finally, a third reason a dog may develop joint issues is simply due to old age or previous injury.  Naturally, as dogs grow older their cartilage will deteriorate, especially if already predisposed due to injury such as a sprain, strain, or muscle tear.

What can owners do to relieve joint pain in their pets?

Since it is unfair to ask animals to stay off their feet in order to minimize pain and discomfort, the next best step is to either provide medication to relieve the pain, or provide a nutritional supplement.  Since many pain relieving medications can cause side effects, such as nausea and diarrhea, a number of pet owners first prefer to try a more natural remedy through supplementation with proven vitamins, minerals, and herbs.

How do supplements fight joint pain and inflammation in dogs?

Supplements work in a number of ways to provide relief to dogs.  Some ingredients such as fatty acids, proteins, and cartilage sources work to repair damaged tissues in the joints to provide additional support.  Other ingredients, such as Vitamin C, are known to support a healthy immune system which fights the inflammation that exacerbates pain.  Additionally, some ingredients act as natural pain relievers by improving mobility.

How can joint pain be prevented?

The best way to prevent joint pain is to feed a dog a high quality diet throughout its entire life while providing additional supplementation that is geared towards supporting joint health – especially if your dog is a breed that is prone to issues NuVetlike arthritis or hip/elbow dysplasia.

Why NuJoint?

NuJoint is available in two different strengths, DS (meaning double strength) and “plus”.  While both formulations contain similar ingredients, the double strength variety has increased anti-inflammatory properties which are especially beneficial for a dog that is experiencing a reduced quality of life due to chronic pain.  NuJoint contains four active ingredients that are known to benefit animals with degenerative issues:  methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), a source of sulfur that improves joint mobility while reducing inflammation; glucosamine, a protein that catalyzes the growth of new cartilage; chronditin, a joint lubricant; and Vitamin C, a necessary component for immune system support.  With these products, animals experience quick relief and a better life!

Canine Ear Infections: Signs, Symptoms, and Prevention

July 16, 2016 by Joe Scarpy

Signs, Symptoms, and Prevention of Canine Ear Infections

Unfortunately for dogs, ear infections and irritation are just one fact of life that many must live with.  For floppy-eared Nu Vet Productsdogs, dogs that love to swim, and breeds that are prone to excessive ear wax production, the chances of developing recurring ear infections is extremely high.  Fortunately, there are steps that pet owners can take to prevent the dangers and discomfort of regular ear issues.  Thanks to NuVet Therapeutic Ear Treatment, ear infections can become a thing of the past.

What causes ear infections in dogs?

There are a number of reasons a dog may suffer from this painful condition.  At the most basic level, an ear infection is simply an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria in the ear that causes pain, swelling, and discomfort.  Floppy eared dogs are more likely to trap these bacteria in the ear, as are breeds that have excessive ear hair growth, such as poodles, or dogs that naturally produce a lot of ear wax, like German Shepherds.  In addition, certain parasites, such as ear mites, can cause irritation that leads to infection.

How do I know my dog has an ear infection?

NuVet ProductsThere are many telltale signs that indicate your dog is suffering from ear discomfort.  The most common symptom is excessive head shaking or pawing at the ears.  A dog with a serious infection may even tilt its head to one side.  If you look into the ear, the sensitive skin may appear red and inflamed, and you may notice a yeast-like odor.  Ear wax may appear unusually dark or tar-like, and in the case of ear mites, you may notice what looks like coffee grounds inside your pet’s ear.

How can I prevent ear infections in my dog?

The best way to prevent an ear infection is to regularly clean your dog’s ears with a specially formulated ear cleaning solution.  An ear wash will flush the ear of wax build up while removing debris and helping restore the sensitive tissue to the proper pH.  If bacteria or yeast is present, the ear wash will remove the bacteria while neutralizing odors.

How to Clean a Dog’s Ears

To clean your pet’s ears, gently squirt the solution into the ear canal and massage the base of your dog’s ear in order to distribute the solution.  Allow your dog to shake his or her head, and then use a q-tip or a Kleenex to dry the external portions of the ear.  Never place an object directly into your dog’s ear canal, as you can easily damage sensitive tissues.  The loosened ear wax and debris that is not visible will naturally work its way out of the ear.

Why use NuVet Therapeutic Ear Treatment?

What are the benefits of NuVet’s ear cleaning solution?  This formulation is gentle enough for everyday use, which is perfect for dogs especially prone to ear problems.  Ingredients such as eucalyptus and aloe vera soothe irritated skin and naturally reduce inflammation.  In addition, this formula is proven to remove any unsavory odors caused by yeast or bacteria.
