The Retriev-R-Trainer Hand Held Launcher is a practical aid for training retrievers

Training dummies designed for the use with it can be power thrown two to three times farther than hand thrown dummies. They are useful on land or water. Extra dummies can be used to throw doubles, triples, etc. The Retriev-R-Trainer (RRT) Launcher uses blank power charges for throwing power, thus eliminates the need for a blank pistol.

Note: The Retriev-R-Trainer should only be used with dogs which have already been satisfactorily conditioned to gunfire. The use of “heavy” loads will shorten the useful life of the dummies. To prevent molding or premature deterioration, dry dummy thoroughly following retrieves in water. Increased distance can be obtained by using the plastic dummies and by varying the angle of fire.

Your RRT Launcher is not a firearm, but the same handling, care and safety precautions must be exercised. Your RRT Launcher is provided with certain built-in safety features, but are not substitutes for safe handling practices, which include the use of ear and eye protection as well as the use of heavy leather gloves.

Retriev-R-Trainer Instructions

The Retriev-R-Trainer is a practical aid for training retrievers. Training dummies designed for the use with it can be power thrown two to three times farther than hand thrown dummies. They are useful on land or water. Extra dummies can be used to throw doubles, triples, etc. The Retriev-R-Trainer uses blank power charges for throwing power. The accompanying report eliminates the need for a blank pistol.

Power Loads / Blank Charges

Your power load should be biased on the desired distance of the launch. Use only those charges intended for the Retriev-R-Trainer:

Green Load (Light) –Distance of launch will be approximately 150′
Yellow Load (medium) – Distance of launch will be approximately 175′
Red Load (Heavy) – Distance of launch will be approximately 200′

Please note that we do not recommend the consistent use of Heavy (Red Power Loads) as we feel that the yellows are more than sufficient and will be easier on you and your equipment.

Maintenance:

Failure to properly maintain the RRT Launcher may result in serious injury or death. Proper maintenance requires you use a gun cleaning solvent to thoroughly clean the barrel, chamber, and hinge areas after each use. You may purchase the RRT Cleaning Kit to simplify this process. A small amount of gun oil applied to the hinge area after cleaning will help to insure smooth operation. Cleaning of the chamber can be enhanced by using a .22 caliber wire brush. Also, thoroughly clean and dry the inside of the dummy tube after each launch to be certain that, prior to each time you launch the dummy from your launcher, it is free of debris both internally and externally. Failure to properly maintain the aluminum insert tube in your dummy may result in serious injury or death. A rubber O- Ring in a grove near the outer end of the barrel provides a seal for the release gases of the power charge. This O-Ring will wear causing some of the gases to escape, thereby reducing the flight distance of the dummy. Apply a thin coat of Vaseline, or any other lubricant safe for use on rubber components, to prevent drying and cracking of the O-Ring. Replacement O-Rings are available separately.

Preparation for Firing

Place an RRT training dummy over the barrel and slide it down. The distance of the throw can be controlled by how far the dummy is placed down the barrel — all the way for maximum distance, less for shorter throws.

Open the breech by pressing the thumb release/latch located in the middle of the launcher just above the hand grip. The launcher will now pivot open exposing the open chamber for receiving the blank power charge. Fully seat the charge in the chamber as you would a single shot rifle or shotgun. Close the unit and press the thumb latch to insure that it is fully closed.

Launching

Firmly grasp the launcher handle in one hand with the thumb latch oriented toward the shoulder of the holding arm. The heel of the holding hand should be facing the thumb latch and your fingers should be wrapped firmly around the grip. Your thumb will be closest to the Pull Knob. Bend the elbow slightly and position the launcher about waist high and one foot from your body. You should aim about 45° from the horizontal off to your side toward the target area. Pull the firing knob back to its fully extended position and release it to launch.

Safety When In Use

Always use ear and eye protection and it is suggested you wear heavy leather gloves when firing.
Do not store the unit with a training dummy on the barrel and clean before storage.
Before firing or loading or firing, make sure the metal insert in the dummy and barrel are free of any debris.
Children should not be allowed to play with this device as it is not a toy.
Hearing protection is recommended as the loud report may affect hearing to people and dogs
Treat this training tool as you would an firearm and never Fire or Point The Retriev-R-Trainer an Animal or Person.
Never dry fire any hand held launcher

The RRT Launcher is guaranteed for 3 years from the date of purchase to be free of manufacturer defects. This guarantee is void if other than the recommended power charges are used or if the product is not used in conformance with these instructions.

Dog Training Bumper and Dummies

Training bumpers and dummies come in several different shapes, colors, sizes and have several different uses. There use boils down to the retrieve, but why are there so many different options?

Both, dog training bumpers and dog training dummies can come in either plastic or canvas and their main objective is to simulate a dead game bird in the field. Used both on the water and in the field these are an excellent choice for any daily training regimen.

Why, So Many Bumper Options?

There are mainly three or four different colors of dog training dummies to choose from. Others are produced and available at your Dog training supply retailer but are just variations of the basic four colors. White and white/black dog training bumpers are used to build confidence and show contrast in different training environments. Orange or black dog training

dummies are used to encourage a dog to use his nose or can also be used for contrast in the snow. Bumper diameters are also an option. 2″ dummies tend to be the most common but 3″ and larger tend to be used in different terrains as to promote the dog’s ability to see the bumper and also to become accustom to different size objects in their mouth.

Simulated Game Bird Dummies

There are also a couple additional options when it comes to the simulated Duck, Goose or Pheasant. Both Dokken and Avery offer a simulated Duck retrieval dummy that is also a great alternative to the standard bumper. Avery offers the Avery True Bird (ATB) and the Avery EZ-Bird. Avery EZ-Bird and ATB have a life size duck body with a floppy head to simulate the feel of a real bird in your dog’s mouth. Dokken’s Dead Fowl Trainer (DFT) is also designed with a life sized foam type body but also has rigid feet and a hard floppy head to simulate a dead bird and to teach the dog how to hold the bird correctly. The hard head and feet teach the dog to the main body of the duck and the hard floppy head it designed to smack the dog in the snout if he starts to become aggressive and start to shake the bird.
