10 Things Every Hunting Lease Agreement Should Cover

June 19, 2017 by Joe Scarpy

Hunting Lease Insurance

Hunting Lease Agreements

Growing numbers of landowners throughout America are coming to realize that they can put their land to good financial use by making it available to hunters. Doing so typically involves a hunting lease agreement between landowner and hunters. The lease agreement sets out the rules governing the use of the land so that both parties know their rights and responsibilities.

According to the American Hunting Lease Association, leases can be offered to individual hunters, groups of hunters, or even establish hunting clubs. In any case, they suggest that the following 10 items (at minimum) be covered in a hunting lease agreement, regardless of who it is offered to:

1. Types of Hunting Allowed

A lease agreement should directly stipulate what types of hunting are allowed. This means hunting with bows, shotguns, etc. This is important because local ordinances may prohibit certain types of hunting practices. It may also be important if the size of the land will not support every kind of hunting that is generally practiced in the local area.

2. Available Game

A landowner may want to stipulate the available game based on current circumstances. For example, a farmer may be having a lot of trouble with deer and wild pigs to the extent that he wants hunters to focus on them exclusively. He could stipulate in the lease that no other game is allowed to be taken from his property.

3. Daily Hunter Volume

Between landowner preferences and local ordinances, there are almost always limits on the number of hunters allowed on a piece of land on a daily basis. This is both a safety issue and a matter of practical land management. At no time should a hunting lease agreement be proffered if a daily hunter volume is not established within its provisions.

4. Total Hunting Area

When landowners want to restrict the movement of hunters to certain parts of the land, the total hunting area needs to be stipulated in the lease agreement. If hunters are to be given run of the entire property, its boundary should still be listed in order to avoid any confusion.

5. Hunting Lease Insurance

Landowners may choose to purchase hunting lease insurance on their own or require the insurance be carried by those leasing the land. How insurance is taking care of should be detailed in the lease agreement. No agreement should be signed until insurance is in place.

6. Length of Lease

Typical hunting lease agreements are offered on a daily, seasonal, or annual basis. The length should be stipulated in the agreement.

7. Extra-Lease Costs

There are times landowners choose to assess extra-lease costs in order to cover care and maintenance of the land. These may take the form of kill fees, for example. All extra-lease costs must be contained within the lease or they are unenforceable.

8. On-Site Accommodations

If on-site accommodations (e.g., hunting cabin) are included, the lease must stipulate how those accommodations can and cannot be used. If accommodations are not included, the landowner may want to restrict the use of temporary structures.

9. Vehicle Use

It is important to specify how vehicles can be used on the property. Some landowners want to protect their property by restricting the use of things like ATVs and trucks.

10. Hunting Dogs

Lastly, hunting dogs present unique liability challenges for both landowners and hunters. A good hunting lease agreement will stipulate whether hunting dogs can be used or not and, if so, any restrictions surrounding their use. Landowners also have to be cognizant of their neighbors when considering hunting dogs.

What to Do If You Get Hurt or Lost on a Duck Hunting Trip

August 1, 2016 by Joe Scarpy

Be Safe and Know What to Do if You Get Hurt or Lost on a Duck Hunting Trip

Before you head out to the great outdoors for a hunting trip, it’s important to have a good, solid plan for what to do if Duck Hunting Decalssomething goes wrong. While the chances of getting lost or hurt are minimal if you follow all of the proper safety protocols for hunting, the unexpected can still happen. That’s why every good duck hunter has a plan of action for any kind of emergency that could happen during a hunting trip.

Set a Check-In Time

Especially if you’re going duck hunting alone, but even if you’re with a buddy, it’s a good idea to set a check-in time with a friend or family member. Basically, you’re going to be out in the woods for several hours at least each day that you’re on your hunting trip, and you may not be able to call to check in while you’re in your blind, calling for ducks. However, you can set a time when you know that you’ll be back to your vehicle and able to call.

If you know that you’re going to be done with your duck hunt and back to your truck no later than 7:00 PM, make that your check-in time. Call your emergency contact person by then, and they’ll know that if you don’t get in touch that it’s time to start calling the proper authorities to start searching for you.

Take Care of Immediate First Aid Needs

If you’re hurt, you’ll need to do whatever you can to take care of your immediate first aid needs. This means taking a first aid kit with you, complete with extra bandages, a means to clean wounds, disinfectants, and a tourniquet if you’re bleeding badly. Also, we recommend taking a class on administering emergency first aid, as well as how to use a tourniquet. One of these could save your life, but it can be dangerous to use if you aren’t careful.

Stay Where You Are

If you’re lost, don’t wander around trying to find your bearings. If you’ve set a check-in time and failed to check in, then you can be sure that searchers are out looking for you. You don’t want to wander away from them by accident.

On that note, though, a lot of hunters are downloading duck hunting apps like Duckr to avoid getting lost, especially in the dark. Duckr lets you set digital breadcrumbs so that you can find your blind, get back to your vehicle, and avoid getting lost, even when it’s pitch black outside.

Send an SOS

Of course, in an emergency, you might not have time to wait for someone to come looking for you after they’ve realized that you didn’t check in on time. In these cases, you can call on Duckr, as well. The duck hunting app has an SOS feature that will let authorities know that you’re in trouble and need a rescue.

With a solid plan and some help from your duck hunting app, you can get help in even the worst scenarios on a duck hunt. Make your plan and download Duckr today to stay safe on your next duck hunt.

Interviews With The Master Podcast

For 6.5 years (2004-2011) I hosted a podcast Called Interviews with the Hunting Masters that was exclusive to The Hunting Channel Online members. I stopped producing shows several years ago because I was concentrating on my TV Show Days In the Wild. But after much debate and pestering from some of my fans to get it back up and going. I have decided to bring back the show as a biweekly podcast..

The Goal of the show is to interview and talk to those guys that seem to get it done year in year out, the guys that Popdcasteveryone looks up to in their neck of the woods and try to squeeze out of them those secret tips and tactics that help make them so successful. I’m driven to make the show educational, entertaining and easy to listen to.

We have partnered up with The Outdoor Insiders the number one spot for quality inside hunting information and one of the largest online Hunting, fishing and outdoor gear distributors in the world.

Please subscribe to my Podcast for special discounts and giveaways!

Kicks Choke Tubes Directional Diagonally-Ported Choke Tubes

May 28, 2014 by Joe Scarpy

Improving your shotgun patterns with Kicks Choke Tubes the highest quality precision machined diagonally-ported tubes on the market!

Kicks line of directional diagonally-ported chokes for hunting and competition significantly increase pattern performance (15% to 20% density), and reduce muzzle jump and felt recoil.  All of our chokes are roll-marked externally for quick choke identification and don’t require a wrench for installation or removal.   Kicks Chokes

Directional Porting

Porting is machined at an angle of 135 degrees away from the shooter, reducing side blast prevalent in ports 90 degrees or less.

Competition Grade Chokes

Their competition chokes (12 & 20 gauges) for skeet trap sporting clays and FITASC are finished in polished stainless steel and our hunting chokes (10, 12 & 20 gauge) have a black matte finish.

Faster Wad Separation

Because of its sharp angle, the inside forward lip “grabs”, stabilizes and slows the wad for faster separation of wad
and shot column. This feature combined with a parallel section where the constriction is held constant produces great patterns.

Choke Extension

The external portion extends approximately 1 1/2″ from the muzzle and isn’t noticeable when shooting.

High Flyer Kicks Choke

Kicks High FlyerWhether you’re after distant geese, decoying ducks, a tight holding covey of quail or a ring-neck in a cornfield, Kicks has a “High Flyer” choke perfect for any hunting/shooting situation. Every “High Flyer” choke is designed to shoot lead, steel, tungsten, hevi-shot, or any non-toxic shot.

“High Flyer” chokes are offered in four sizes for 10 and 12ga. shotguns and three sizes for 20ga.

Kicks Vortex – Black Cloud Choke Tube

Kicks has teamed with Federal Ammunition & the Duck Commander to offer the new Kicks “Vortex” choke tube, specifically designed to be used with Federal “Black Cloud” ammo.Vortex Choke Tube

Kicks “Vortex” chokes are a culmination of months of engineering & pattern testing delivering dense, uniform patterns shooting Federal “Black Cloud” ammo.

“Vortex” chokes are available in Improved Cylinder, Modified, Full & XFull constrictions.

When using loads other than “Black Cloud” you would be better off using the “Kicks High Flyer” choke tube for best performance.

You can imagine that when these three powerhouses in the waterfowl industry came together that nothing but the best results were to expected!  Then adding the seal of approval of Phil Robertson, the Duck Commander, you know it is the Real Deal!

Federal “Black Cloud” ammo “Drops ducks like rain” & Kicks “Vortex” choke tubes “Create the Perfect Storm”!

Gobblin’ Thunder Choke Tube

The world’s most well-known turkey choke!

“Gobblin’ Thunder” turkey chokes are the original extended-ported chokes that set the bar for every other choke tube on the market.Kicks Gobblin Thunder

Kick’s chokes are manufactured from the highest quality 17-4PH stainless steel and have a matte-black finish.

“Gobblin Thunder” chokes extend from the barrel approximately 1 3/8″ and are angle ported to reduce recoil and deliver extremely tight and consistent pattern performance.

These chokes easily convert most 10, 12, 16 and 20ga. factory threaded barrels from a mild mannered bird gun into a turkey hunting machine!

“Gobblin Thunder” chokes are not recommended for steel shot or Hevi-shot.

Please refer to the recommendation chart to match your gun and shot size to find the perfect choke for your set-up.

Buck Kicker Choke Tube

Buck KickerDesigned to control (10,12 and 20 gauge) buckshot loads with more consistency than ever before.

“BuckKicker” chokes are available in three constrictions to accommodate buckshot sizes from.000 to #4 buck.

Chokes are manufactured from 17-4PH stainless steel and come with a matte-black finish.

“BuckKicker” chokes are available for most 10,12 and 20 gauge models. “BuckKicker” chokes can also be used for upland game whenever a full choke is required.
Not for use with steel shot. With the right match of choke to your gun, consistent patterns inside a 20″ circle at 40 yards can be achieved.

Recommended shot size use:

Light Full–000 Buckshot

Full–Best all-around 00 Buckshot

Xfull–2 3/4 or 3″ 00 Buckshot–#1 & #4 Buckshot

Kicks Howler Choke Tube

Howler Choke

Kick’s Industries is proud to introduce the new “Howler” predator chokes.

The “Howler” is specifically designed for predator/coyote hunting.

Kicks Howler Choke

The “Howler” will deliver very tight patterns at long distances. You can expect a 20″ to 25″ pattern at 40 yards.

“Howler” chokes are offered in two sizes. The “Howler H” is designed for the HeviShot “Dead Coyote” loads
while the “Howler L” is designed to be used with either coated or non-coated lead buckshot, specifically #1 or #4 buckshot.

“Howler” chokes feature the Kick’s extended/ported design and are manufactured in the USA using PH17-4 grade stainless steel with a blackened finish.

“Howler” chokes are currently available for most 12g shotguns.

Kicks Smoke Competition Choke Tube

The Kicks “Smoke” competition line is available in almost every conceivable constriction including negative constrictions (more open than Smoke Choke Tubeyour bore diameter) through mag full to fulfill the needs of all the clay target sports, skeet trap, five stand and FITASC.

Current inventory includes chokes machined from 17.4 stainless steel with a polished finish.

Like all there chokes, these are engraved & externally laser marked for fast choke identification and do not require a choke wrench for installation or removal!

Shotgun Choke Tube Patterning Tips

  • Always Use a Good Rest
  • Make sure your target is large enough to accept your entire shit pattern
  • Shoot multiple targets – Shoot multiple targets in order to get a true picture of the pattern your gun is producing.
  • Try different brands of shells as they will produce different results
  • Know your guns capabilities before going into the field
  • Keep in mind that a choke that is too tight is just as bad as a choke that is not tight enough.

Kicks Choke Tubes have helped close the deal on thousands of encounters over the years!  If it’s Duck or Goose hunting, harvesting that big Tom Turkey, taking down that pesky Coyote or that next competition shoot, Kicks has the choke that will produce the pattern you need for the job at hand!
