Pete Rickard’s Raccoon Hound Dog Training Kit Review

April 5, 2017 by Joe Scarpy Leave a Comment

Review of Pete Rickard’s Raccoon Hound Dog Training Kit

When teaching a dog to track raccoon, the hound is only as good as the scent product used during training. Pete Rickard's Raccoon Hound Dog Training KitPete Rickard’s is known for producing some of the best training scents in the industry.  The Pete Rickard’s Raccoon Hound Dog Training Kit contains everything a hunter needs to train his or her dog to dependably trail raccoon.

Included in the Pete Rickard’s Raccoon Hound Dog Training Kit are:

  • Pro Coon Drag Dog Training Dummy

  • 1 ¼ oz Raccoon Training Scent

  • Dual Tone Training Whistle with Lanyard

  • Dog Training Booklet

When it comes to raccoon trailing, the dummy that hunters use is important.  Instead of a retrievable piece of canvas and foam that waterfowlers use, coon hunters require an item that can easily be dragged across the ground to create a trail.  The Pete Rickard’s Pro Coon Drag is 2 ¾’’ x 12’’, and is the perfect size for teaching your hound dog to follow the coon scent.  Unlike other training dummies, the design of this coon drag is flat, which is best for laying a training track.  Grommets on each end of the dummy are rustproof.  The canvas material holds scent well, which is ideal for training.

Perhaps the most important consideration, however, when teaching your hound dog to track raccoon is the use of a high quality scent product. The Pete Rickard’s brand has led the hunting and trapping industry in scent products for over 85 years.  The Pete Rickard’s Raccoon Training Scent contains only natural musks and animal extracts, which will greatly aid a hound dog’s training.

A coon dog can easily become separated from his or her owner while tracking and treeing a raccoon. Teaching your hound to respect whistle tones is important, both for safety and obedience.  A whistle with more than one tone, such as Pete Rickard’s Dual Tone Training Whistle, is great for teaching your dog to respect multiple commands from a distance. The included lanyard ensures you never misplace your whistle again.

The exclusive training booklet provided in this kit provides tips and tricks for the proper training of your raccoon dog.

Benefits of the Pete Rickard’s Raccoon Hound Dog Training Kit

This training kit contains two products that are important for the successful training of a raccoon dog:  high quality scent and a raccoon drag.  Hunters will save time and money by purchasing both items at once in this convenient kit.

Limitations of the Pete Rickard’s Raccoon Hound Dog Training Kit
There are no limitations to the purchase of this kit.  Even for veteran dog owners, the products that are included are staple items that should be found in every hunter’s training arsenal.  No one can ever have too many dummies, training whistles, or high quality scent products!

Who Benefits Most from Pete Rickard’s Raccoon Hound Dog Training Kit?
Anyone who is interested in training his or her hound to track and trail raccoons – no matter the level of training experience – will benefit from this training kit.  The convenience of tried-and-true products in one package is unparalleled.

Similar Products in the Pete Rickard’s Line
For hunters of other types of game, Dog and Puppy training kits are also available for sportsmen and women who specialize in duck, grouse, pheasants, and rabbit hunting and tracking.

Bottom Line
The Pete Rickard’s Raccoon Hound Dog Training Kit contains essential items for training a coon hound.  Without reliable scent and a good coon drag, dog training will require more time and effort.  This kit is perfect for all raccoon hunters, no matter their level of training experience.

Training Your Gun Dog – Hunting Dog Training Supplies

February 22, 2017 by Joe Scarpy Leave a Comment

Hunting Dog Training Supplies – Training Your Gun Dog

Training a hunting dog is a rite of passage for many gun dog owners.  Not only can a hunter better bond with his or her dog, but can also shape the exact skills and behaviors that are required in the pet.  With the proper tools, training a hunting dog can be a relatively quick and easy task.

Collar and Check Cord
Training a dog to reliably be off-leash in the field requires more than a simple collar and leash.  A check cord is necessary in Gun Dog Training Suppliesthe beginning stages of off-leash training to control your dog from long distances, while an owner will often opt for an electronic collar or a shock collar with GPS capabilities later in the training process in addition to a traditional collar.

Kennel
Next you will need to kennel train your dog so that your pet can travel safely to the field, as well as be properly contained if necessary.  In addition, a kennel can be used at home to help potty train your dog while keeping him or her out of trouble in the house.Waterfowl Decals

Hunting Dummies
Before you can begin to use live animals to train your hunting dog, you will need to start with bumpers or dummies that help teach your pet the proper behaviors for the intended style of hunting.  As the dog matures from puppy to adult, he or she will progress from a bumper to a more realistic dummy.

Scent
You will also need to get your dog used to the scent of the game you wish to hunt, which can be accomplished by purchasing

scented wax or spray to apply to the puppy’s bumper or dummy.  Scents are available in a variety of options, including quail, pheasant, grouse, dove, or duck odors.

Training Treats
Positive reinforcement is also necessary when training a puppy, so make sure to stock up on lots of training treats, especially high value ones that are meat or cheese flavored.

Blank Pistol
You will also have to condition your gun dog to the sound of your rifle, which can be achieved by slowly transitioning your

pet to be accepting of increasingly loud noises.  A blank pistol is ideal for this type of training.

Whistle
When teaching your dog important commands such as recall, using a loud whistle can help gain immediate control of your

animals in the field during training exercises (and beyond).

Books and DVDs
New to dog training?  Purchasing a book or DVD with professional tips and tricks can help the dog training process go as smoothly as possible while enabling efficient communication between you and your dog.  Even if this isn’t your first time training a hunting dog, refreshing your skills (or learning a new one) never hurts.

Hunting Shed Antlers with a Shed Dog or Antler Dog

April 25, 2014 by Joe Scarpy Leave a Comment

The use of a Shed Dog or Antler Dog when looking for shed antlers has become more and more popular…

The use of a Shed Dog or Antler Dog when looking for shed antlers has become more and more popular and these days we receive as manyDog hunting antler questions on training your dog to hunt shed antlers as training them to hunt birds. We were recently at the Madison Deer & Turkey Classic where we were almost talking about shed hunting exclusively (which was expected at that venue)!  One of the biggest questions asked was if they could teach their breed of dog to hunt shed antlers, the answer is yes!  You can teach almost any dog to hunt shed antlers if they have the desire to retrieve and they are exposed to it correctly!

Fun / Retrieving

Making the Antler itself fun and exciting is very important; however do not let them get bored of it.  I suggest only taking it out when it’s time to train and be sure to make it fun!  Get your dog excited about it and get him to chase after it and bring it back, upon return be sure to praise him Antler Training Systemand show how pleased you are with his work.  If after a few retrieves he does not want to pick up the antler, stop and put the antler away.  We want them to want to get the retrieve and get the antler!  Next time stop short of them getting bored with the session.  For example it they were excited and retrieved the antler 6 times and on the 7th they went out and did not pick it up, you would want to stop at the 4th or 5th retrieve at your next training session.  We want them to “want” to get the antler and want more… This will end the session with them looking at you as to say “Hey what’s up, throw it again boss!” and that is what we want, the desire for more!

Visual / Scent

Training for shed hunting is both a Visual and a scent/smell training process.  Tom Dokken has developed a sight training system that involves Shed Antler Large Training Silhouettean antler silhouette training tool that teaches the important step in visualizing the antler in the field. This product works and is used with all dogs we train!  If the dog is not downwind of the antler and he has not been taught to hunt using his eyes, he may never find that shed antler that is that is down wind.  This is done while teaching them to quarter through the field.  The use of specialty shed dog training scents is a very important part of the process.  We start by loading the antler up with scent and then reducing the amount of scent that is added to the antler until we are just putting it on the base of the pedicle.  This is done while teaching them to quarter through the field.

Eliminating Human Scent and adding tracking scent

As we proceed thru the training / tracking process, we need to make sure the antler is free of any scent other than of the Rack Wax or Antler Scent.  I suggest obtaining a clean virgin 5 – gallon bucket or purchasing Dokken’s Rack Washing system.  Be sure to use this bucket for nothing other than Antler Rack Washwashing your training antlers.  Keep in mind that you need a bucket that is free of any other scent; you do not want your dog hunting through the woods looking for pickles.   After you have washed your antlers to remove any unwanted scent, you will want to add the training scent, be sure to use scent free plastic gloves when handling and planting these antlers in the woods or field.  This will condition them to search for the scent of the antler not for you or what you had for lunch.

I recommend viewing one or both of the Shed Hunting videos that are available from Tom Dokken or Moore Outdoors.  Both of these companies manufacture all the scents and equipment that we use in training our client dogs to hunt shed antlers.

This is a Great Seminar Video that I took of Tom Dokken at Pheasant Fest

Part 1

Part 2

Keep in mind that training the Shed Dog does not happen overnight and that patience is required when working with your dog.  This process will take weeks if not seasons for the dog to completely catch on to what you are expecting them to do.  Remember to keep it fun for both of you and you will have an Antler Dog that will be hunting shed antlers with you for seasons to come!

Garmin Astro vs. Garmin Alpha GPS Dog Tracking Systems

December 13, 2013 by Joe Scarpy Leave a Comment

We get a lot of questions on the new Garmin Astro and Garmin Alpha model tracking and Track & Train Collars; So, I hope this will explain any questions that you may have.

First I must say that these are the coolest tracking devices that I have ever seen!  Both models allow
you to track at least 10 Dogs from a distance of up to 9-miles and with the Alpha the number goes to 20 Dogs!  If
your dog is 5 miles away, you can’t possibly know it they are barking…Wrong!  Garmin’s Bark Detection lets you
know your dog is barking even if it’s out of audible range!  This is a crucial feature for treeing hounds or running hounds that cover a lot of ground, even in heavy cover.

Garmin’s Astro is a tracking / GPS system only and Garmin’s Alpha is a Track & Train System that offers 18 training levels of continuous and momentary stimulation and tone and vibration alerts!

Now let’s get into the details…

Garmin Astro – Premier Tracking System for Sporting DogsGarmin Astro Bundle Sale

•9-mile range with steel VHF antenna attached
(shorter antenna included for smaller dogs)

•20% more battery life when updated Astro, plus battery preserving rescue mode

•Track up to 10 dogs at a time (with purchase of additional
dog devices)

•Top-mounted, high-sensitivity GPS and GLONASS

•Advanced mapping with optional BirdsEye Satellite Imagery
and TOPO maps

Astro

The unique Astro dog tracking system pinpoints your dog’s position and shows you exactly where he is on a vivid color screen, even when you can’t see or hear him. The Astro system has the features you’ve been asking for, such as increased range and battery life, more durable antenna, a simplified user interface and must-have mapping capability.

Astro minisite – See Your Dogs’ Every Move

The Astro system includes the Astro handheld and the rugged transmitter collar¹ with an orange polyurethane strap (accessory color straps sold separately). Features top mounted GPS and GLONASS
receivers and a newly-redesigned steel VHF antenna. Switching to rescue mode reduces the refresh rate in order to preserve battery life, giving you more time to look for a lost dog. Plus, Collar Lock creates a 4-digit PIN number
that helps prevent others from seeing your dog’s whereabouts — a useful feature in field trials to ensure that an Astro is used only as a recovery tool when a dog in competition becomes lost.

Bark Detection

lets you know your dog is barking even if it’s out of audible range, a crucial feature for treeing hounds or running
hounds that cover a lot of ground, even in heavy cover.

Improvements to the Garmin Astro

The intuitive and easy-to-use Astro system takes dog tracking to an entirely new level with new software for the Astro which supports the dog device and adds new features, such as bark detection. The interface streamlines what is displayed by allowing dogs that are outside the current zoom level to have their location notated in the display’s margin. You can also choose the amount of each dog’s tracklog displayed, or toggle it off completely, to avoid cluttering the map.

The Astro, compatible with any DC-series transmitter, also has enhanced map drawing capabilities, BirdsEye Satellite Imagery compatibility (subscription required), vibration-based alerts and a 3-axis electronic compass.

Both durable and waterproof, the Astro 320 system features the legendary toughness that’s built to withstand the elements, whether it’s dust, dirt, humidity or water. Nothing is a match for this essential hunting companion.

Upgrade with Ease

Getting what you need for the hunt is now a little easier. You can purchase the entire Astro bundle or as many collars as you need. And your Astro is compatible with every DC series dog collar. The Dtransmitter is our only dog device with remote bark detection and improved battery life (including battery preserving rescue mode). The improved battery life means when you set your update rate to every 5 seconds the battery lasts 26 hours. In rescue mode, the battery lasts 54 hours, giving you more time to find your lost dog.

Additional Mapping

The Garmin Astro 320 has a microSD™ card slot so you can load TOPO U.S. 24K maps for land elevation contours or City Navigator NT® map data for turn-by-turn routing on roads. Astro also supports BirdsEye Satellite
Imagery (subscription required), that so you can download satellite images to your device and integrate them with your maps. Mapping depicts important nearby geographical features and lets you know if your dog has crossed a creek or is
nearing a dangerous road.

Astro is also compatible with Garmin Custom Maps, free software that transforms paper and electronic maps into downloadable maps for your device.

Track Dogs in Dense Cover

As often as every 5 seconds, your dog’s DC 50 transmits his position to your handheld, and you can see his current location and a trail of where he’s been on the map page of your handheld. Switch over to the Dog Tracker page to view a compass pointing to your dog’s location as well as his current status: whether he’s running, sitting, on point or treeing quarry. Astro also can let you know when your dog is barking, even if he’s out of audible range.

You can also see each dog’s precise distance on the map page, and you can choose to auto zoom the map so all dogs can be seen on the display at any time. Dogs that are too far away to fit on the map’s current zoom scale can be notated on the display’s margin in the direction of the dog’s location. You can also choose the duration that each dog’s tracklog is viewed on the display, or toggle it off completely.

Astro boasts a high-sensitivity GPS and GLONASS receiver which is mounted to the top of the collar so that can track your dog’s position even in heavy tree cover or deep canyons. You can track up to 10 dogs at one time with Astro, from up to 9 miles away (depending on terrain). The system transmits information by line-of-sight, so it reaches farthest in flat, open territory.

Count Your Coveys

After you’ve captured your quarry, mark the exact spot with Astro’s Covey Counter™, a special waypoint that tells you the exact location, time of day and elevation where you found your prey, as well as the number of birds you flushed and took from that location. Astro lets you save other special waypoints, such as “Truck” and “Lodge,” so you can save the location of these places quickly and easily for each hunt. Astro also offers special waypoint icons to represent food plots, tree stands and other hunting-related points.

Plan Your Next Trip

Take charge of your next adventure with BaseCamp, software that lets you view and organize maps, waypoints, routes, and tracks. This free trip-planning software even allows you to create Garmin Adventures that you can share with friends, family or fellow explorers. BaseCamp displays topographic map data in 2-D or 3-D on your computer screen, including contour lines and elevation profiles. It also can transfer an unlimited amount of satellite images to your
device when paired with a BirdsEye Satellite Imagery subscription.

Turn Your Computer Into a Base Station for Tracking Dogs

The all-new BaseStation lets you turn your laptop (loaded with BaseCamp) into a field control center for tracking multiple dogs (additional DC 50 collar units required). View real-time GPS/GLONASS information on the larger display of your computer, making it ideal for canine search and rescue teams. And because it’s Garmin GPS-based, safer, more effective tracking is possible, even where Internet and cell phone service isn’t.

effective features, including 18 levels of momentary and 18 levels of continuous stimulation or an audible tone command. Plus, a lockout setting is available to avoid accidental stimulation or tone.

When the TT 10 reaches a certain battery level, it will slow down the update rate at which it pings Alpha 100 from every 2.5 seconds to every 2 minutes. This mode should provide additional battery life to the TT 10, giving you more time to search for and locate your dog.
