Training Your Gun Dog – Hunting Dog Training Supplies

February 22, 2017 by Joe Scarpy

Hunting Dog Training Supplies – Training Your Gun Dog

Training a hunting dog is a rite of passage for many gun dog owners.  Not only can a hunter better bond with his or her dog, but can also shape the exact skills and behaviors that are required in the pet.  With the proper tools, training a hunting dog can be a relatively quick and easy task.

Collar and Check Cord
Training a dog to reliably be off-leash in the field requires more than a simple collar and leash.  A check cord is necessary in Gun Dog Training Suppliesthe beginning stages of off-leash training to control your dog from long distances, while an owner will often opt for an electronic collar or a shock collar with GPS capabilities later in the training process in addition to a traditional collar.

Kennel
Next you will need to kennel train your dog so that your pet can travel safely to the field, as well as be properly contained if necessary.  In addition, a kennel can be used at home to help potty train your dog while keeping him or her out of trouble in the house.Waterfowl Decals

Hunting Dummies
Before you can begin to use live animals to train your hunting dog, you will need to start with bumpers or dummies that help teach your pet the proper behaviors for the intended style of hunting.  As the dog matures from puppy to adult, he or she will progress from a bumper to a more realistic dummy.

Scent
You will also need to get your dog used to the scent of the game you wish to hunt, which can be accomplished by purchasing

scented wax or spray to apply to the puppy’s bumper or dummy.  Scents are available in a variety of options, including quail, pheasant, grouse, dove, or duck odors.

Training Treats
Positive reinforcement is also necessary when training a puppy, so make sure to stock up on lots of training treats, especially high value ones that are meat or cheese flavored.

Blank Pistol
You will also have to condition your gun dog to the sound of your rifle, which can be achieved by slowly transitioning your

pet to be accepting of increasingly loud noises.  A blank pistol is ideal for this type of training.

Whistle
When teaching your dog important commands such as recall, using a loud whistle can help gain immediate control of your

animals in the field during training exercises (and beyond).

Books and DVDs
New to dog training?  Purchasing a book or DVD with professional tips and tricks can help the dog training process go as smoothly as possible while enabling efficient communication between you and your dog.  Even if this isn’t your first time training a hunting dog, refreshing your skills (or learning a new one) never hurts.

The 5 Best Dog Breeds for Pheasant Hunting

February 1, 2017 by Joe Scarpy

Best Dog Breeds for Pheasant Hunting

Pheasant hunting is much more difficult without the help of a good hunting dog. A long day of hunting can grow frustrating when you don’t scare out any Roosters and you leave emptyhanded. A good pheasant hunting dog can be an invaluable asset to a hunter’s experience in the field. There is no greater feeling than hunting with a well-trained, experience dog.

Many people from all over the world enjoy the sport of pheasant hunting, and over the years several dog breeds have risen to the top of the list of “Best Pheasant Hunters”.  While some of these breeds may not have the popularity of the Golden Retriever, or the cute looks of the Pomsky, they all are excellent bird dogs.

Take a look through our list of the Top 5 Pheasant Hunting breeds.  We are confident you will find the perfect one for you.

1. Labrador Retriever.
The Labrador retriever is a large breed with a smooth, short coat that is double layered and is usually solid Black, Yellow, or Chocolate in color. Their height ranges from 22 to 27 inches from the ground, and their weight usually ranges from 54 to 86Labrador Retriever pounds. Labs are truly universal companion animals, which is why they are the favorite dog for hunters to own.
This special breed has great determination when they are pheasant hunting. You’ll be amazed to know how smoothly and quietly a lab can run when it’s bird hunting.  This breed has great retriever vision, can swim through icy waters, stand at point for long periods, and fetch a falling bird from any distance.  I guess that is where the “retriever” name comes from!
The Lab is a wonderful hunting dog with bundles of energy.  It’s cold-weather coat is meant for long periods of time outdoors, and they possess a readiness to go to any lengths to retrieve a downed bird.  The Labrador retriever is best known for its Duck hunting abilities, but can also make a great Pheasant hunter.

2. Boykin Spaniel
The Boykin Spaniel is a fairly new breed that has received high marks for its Pheasant hunting abilities. The has become especially popular with bird hunters in the southern part of the United States.

They typically weigh between 25 and 40 pounds. And its height varies between 14 and 18 inches. They have great hunting skills, typified by flushing and retrieving, with moderate speed and agility. Its hanging ears, smart expression, sturdy structure and friendly wagging tail make the Boykin Spaniel one of the best when it comes to pheasant hunting.

3. English Pointer
The English pointer usually displays a natural hunting instincts at a very young age.  This large breed has the power to cover larger areas of the ground in short periods of time. Pointers are usually bred for mountain hunting in warmer climates,Waterfowl Decals but can cover pheasant filled plains of grass just as well.

They have short and smooth coat; its color is mainly white with patches of brown, black, lemon or speckles. Its height ranges from 22 to 26 inches from the ground to the highest point of the shoulders, and the weight is usually between 45and 75 pounds.

They thrive when hunting running birds, like the pheasant. And are especially adept at flushing the birds out of tough places. Because of this, these dogs excel at catching birds that escape quickly, like the pheasant.

The English Pointer is the perfect company on large field hunts or through difficult terrain.

4. Brittany Spaniel

The Brittany Spaniel is a small breed that has great speed and dexterity, allowing them to cover a lot of different terrains. They are strong and durable breed; their skin and coat are built to withstand punctures and tears when running through thick cover.

The Brittany’s height usually ranges from 18 to 23 inches from the ground to the highest point of the shoulders, and the

typically weigh between 30 and 40 pounds. Their friendly nature makes the Brittany an excellent hunting companion.

Brittany’s that have been bred for hunting require more exercise and attention than those bred only as a family dog. The Brittany remains true to the old land hunting breed hundreds of years ago, and can still make an excellent Pheasant hunting dog.

5.  German Wirehaired Pointer

The German Wirehaired Pointer is possibly the most admired pointer dog in the world. Elegant and powerful, the GWP is

perfectly suited for bird hunting.  They are extremely versatile and have a strange ability to move and spin with astonishing speed. Their strong, broad muzzle is ideal for pointing and retrieving pheasants.  Another advantage they have is their webbed feet, allowing them to go after waterfowl in the water without hesitation.

The hunting instinct of the German wirehaired pointer was derived from the German Pointer and Pudelpointer, while its wiry coat was brought from the Griffon.  It’s typically brown, white, black, ticked or roan, although an occasional color of the solid Brown is possible.

They are versatile hunters that will track, point, and retrieve both on land and in water. They are strong dogs that are very well muscled and tend to be very determine, even when in the field for long periods of time. They usually stand 22 to 26

inches from the ground, and weigh between 55 and 70 pounds. They are an affectionate breed and loyal family and hunting companion.

Conclusion:

Every hunter has a different opinion about which breed he likes best, so this list it firmly based in my own personal opinion.  Most hunters share a preference for the breed they have worked with the most, or the one that their fathers used with them when growing up.  However, choosing any one of these five breeds will ensure you have a loyal, patient companion on your pheasant hunts.  To find the perfect hunting dog, look for a highly reputable local breeder near you.

Gun Dog Training – In General

March 16, 2016 by Joe Scarpy

Gun Dog Training – The Basic Concept

The major categories of hunt dogs are retrievers, flushing spaniels and pointing breeds. The training of these breeds varies in few aspects depending on the job specification. Irrespective of the job, common practice is to start gun dog training as young as puppies as young as 3 or 4 months old.

The gun dog training process for the Retriever will consist of making them sit alert without moving to retrieve the game. They should clearly watch where all the games fall after hitting. If the dog fails to see the fall of the bird or bumper, they will be sent on blind retrieve. The hand signal and whistle will be used to convey the message. Special training is given to hold the bird gently and firmly until asked to release to the handler’s hand. Shaking to ward off excess water or to battle the bird is not permitted. The dog should be trained to stay within the gun range. He should remain sitting during calling of birds in the blind or on the flush of the bird and gunfire in the field.

Gun Dog Training

Gun Dog Qualities

The primary qualities of these dogs like intelligence, controllability and adaptability should be sharpened during the training process. Enough care should be taken in enhancing stamina and providing a balanced diet. Their ability to smell feathers, track birds, even under thick covers is of prime criteria. Their ability to remember each fall is to be taken care of during training. They should nark the area of the fall and proceed directly to that area when released for the retrieve. They should be trained to enter all types of terrain without hesitation and hunt for and or retrieve downed game. Socialization skill is another important skill that needs to be developed. Concentration is to be acquired through training. The eyesight of the dogs should be keen and should be aware of what is happening, but also understand what their handler is asking of them at all times. Keep in mind that they are working for you and they should not be hunting for themselves.

There is another difference in training of the gun dogs depending on the breed and the handlers. They should be trained to chase the falling trajectory of the birds. And of course, they should be friendly enough to the master and willing to accept praise and pressure. The behavior pattern of all dogs is not same. His domicile, environment, as well as daily structure, shall have to be made clear to him through training and repetition. Remember that the gun dog training should not be overdone. Overtraining should be avoided and most dogs only need about 15-20 minutes of training every day.
